Oracle Puts Out FAQ File on Its iSeries Plans

Last week, I told you about how Oracle and IBM were working together to rebuild the channel for the former J.D. Edwards ERP application suites, the RPG-based World suite and the cross-platform EnterpriseOne suite. In that story, I discussed with IBM how Oracle might be encouraged to fully support i5/OS with its future Project Fusion ERP suite, which is a future Java-based suite that Oracle is working on and which is supposed to be the kicker for the Oracle E-Business Suite, PeopleSoft Enterprise, JDE EnterpriseOne, and JDE World software suites.

What I didn't know last week was that Oracle had put out a three-page, reasonably detailed document relating to its plans for the System i platform, which you can read by clicking here. In that document, Oracle put a little more detail on its plans, saying that EnterpriseOne Release 8.12 would be released in the next 12 months and that EnterpriseOne 9 would come out in 2007; the World suite would get regular tweaks and then World Release A9 would come out in 2007 as well. These updated releases will support the then-current versions of the i5/OS platform and System i hardware.

As for native support for the Fusion suite, Oracle is still keeping its options open, but says that it is soliciting feedback from end users before finalizing its plans. All the details are in that PDF above, and it is interesting reading. If you are an EnterpriseOne or World shop, now is the time to lean on Oracle to support i5/OS and DB2/400 natively with the future Fusion suite, and if you are feeling ambitious, you could even tell Oracle you want a version of Fusion written in RPG. You might get two of them, but with Oracle so firmly committed to Java, the RPG support seems highly unlikely.
