  • IBM Adds Zend to Value Pak, Ships ESX Server Storage Support

October 15, 2007 Timothy Prickett Morgan

Starting this week, IBM will deliver a new Value Pack bundle of software for the i5/OS V5R4 operating system that contains PHP and database software suitable for running PHP applications natively on the System i platform–all installable at the same time and all for a discounted price, including software and support.

The Zend and MySQL Value Pack for i5/OS (licensed program product number 5639-MVP) will be available on October 19, and it includes a license to three programs from Zend Technology, the creator of PHP, and one from MySQL, the creator of the popular database engine that is often behind PHP applications. The Zend Core for i5/OS middleware (a commercial-grade PHP engine), Zend Studio for i5/OS (an integrated development environment for creating PHP applications for the System i), and Zend Platform (a set of tools for ruggedizing PHP applications), all with gold-level business support are part of the new Value Pack; so is a license to the MySQL Enterprise Server 5.0 database with silver support. The Zend licenses are for one System i processor with support spanning one year, and the Zend Studio license is for one programmer seat with one year’s of support. The MySQL license is based on the whole server, not a particular processor or core count, and includes access to MySQL’s network monitoring and advisory service and production support, which is the company’s highest level of technical support.

The Zend and MySQL Value Pack is supported on iSeries 270, 800, 810, 820, 825, 830, 840, 870, and 890 machines; System i5 520, 550, 570, and 595 machines; System i 515, 520, 525, 550, 570, and 595 machines; and the new Power6-based System i 570. It requires i5/OS V5R4 or V5R4M5 with Option 33, the PASE AIX runtime environment, installed. The software from Zend and MySQL are not distributed on any media, but are only offered on download. The pack costs $6,595 per server; presumably customers who need to can activate more cores to support Zend if their workloads demand it, but pricing for support for these extra cores was not available at press time.
