  • BOSaNOVA Debuts Virtual Environment Thin Clients

    June 3, 2008 Dan Burger

BOSaNOVA continued to expand its thin client product line by rolling out new XPe line of thin clients specifically designed for Citrix XenDesktop virtual environments. XenDesktop is Citrix’s solution for simplifying desktop computing by relieving many of the management headaches and reducing the costs associated with traditional desktop computing. The company claims cost reductions of up to 40 percent can be realized.

The XPe thin clients are based on the Microsoft XP Professional operating system and include standard features such as TCP/IP TN5250e terminal emulation, an IE 6 (SP2) browser with Sun and Microsoft JVM, Macromedia Flash, and Adobe Acrobat Reader. In addition, you’ll find device support for printers, USB, and PCMCIA; connection to Citrix or Terminal Server, Windows Domain servers; and the capability to install additional Windows applications.

These new units, according to BOSaNOVA’s press release, offer greater performance with faster storage. At the top end of the hardware options the performance is provided by a 1.5 GHz processor, and the range of XPe models also provide flexible mounting options and low power consumption. “ReadyOn” technology is a nice feature that reduces boot time to less than 10 seconds.

In general, thin clients provide advantages in workflow, security, and lower maintenance.

“What Citrix and BOSaNOVA can now give customers is a complete, user-centric desktop delivery solution that couples Citrix’s next-generation desktop virtualization technology with BOSaNOVA’s proven thin client architecture,” said Sumit Dhawan, senior director of product marketing for the Desktop Delivery Group at Citrix Systems. “Citrix’s partnership with BOSaNOVA will allow organizations to realize the full potential of a desktop delivery system designed to simplify desktop management while ensuring a personalized user experience that doesn’t degrade over time.”

From the BOSaNOVA side, company president Martin Pladgeman added, “The combination of our new X-Series thin clients and Citrix’s XenDesktop provide customers with greater performance, a better end user experience, faster boot time, and lower total cost of ownership. Add to that our ability to customize these new XPe units to match our customers’ exact requirements and we’re able offer a complete and unique solution.”

BOSaNOVA’s CE.Net and Linux thin client units also support XenDesktop.
