  • Kisco Adds File Encryption to Amazon Cloud DR Offering

    December 8, 2009 Alex Woodie

System i shops that are deploying Kisco Information Systems i2S3 cloud-based backup and recovery service, which offers an i OS interface to Amazon‘s Simple Storage Service (S3), will now be able to encrypt the i OS backups they upload to the Amazon cloud, and decrypt them during recovery.

Kisco launched its i2S3 offering two months ago as an easy and affordable way for System i shops to get their critical backups offsite. The offering includes a set of i OS commands that mimic the platform’s native save and restore commands. But instead of saving backup objects to a tape drive, disk, or other local device, i2S3 sends the backups to Amazon’s S3 cloud.

With last week’s launch of i2S3 Release 1.02, Kisco added support for encrypted backup sets, which will widen the potential base of users for this product.

According to Kisco, entire backup sets are encrypted prior to transmission to Amazon S3. Encryption keys are dynamically created during save processing and stored on the System i, the vendor says, and when an encrypted save set is restored, the saved key will safely decrypt the data.

Licenses for i2S3 range from $1,295 for a single System i server or logical partition, or $2,195 for an unlimited number of System i servers or LPARs. Customers must also buy storage from Amazon S3. Pricing for S3 starts at $.15 per gigabyte stored, and $0.10 per GB transferred in, and $.017 per GB transferred out.
