  • Attachmate Updates Fraud Fighting Software

    July 12, 2011 Alex Woodie

Attachmate recently launched the version 4.2 release of Luminet, its enterprise fraud management (EFM) solution that watches every move that users make on an organization’s servers. The new release should be easier for non-technical personnel to use, and be more accurate in identifying the bad guys.

There is an epidemic of fraud in this country that is unlike anything we’ve ever seen. Whereas the morally corrupt may have picked up guns to rob a bank in the old days, today the bad guys are using computers to steal money. And while there will always be some criminal element in human society, regular employees appear to be succumbing to the temptation and the opportunity to steal money and data from their own employers.

Attachmate’s Luminet solution is geared more to tackle internal fraud, which accounts for the vast majority of internal IT breaches, despite the fact that external fraud (conducted by hackers via the Internet) gets more attention in the press. Luminet, which is an OEM version of software developed by the Israeli company Intellinx, uses “sniffer” technology to capture all screen displays, keystrokes, and messages communicated between workstations and servers. The software has seen use in financial services companies, and is designed to work with IBM i servers.

With Luminet version 4.2, the software received several notable enhancements, including a reworked case manager and workflow system that makes it easier for security teams to view fraud alerts, share leads, and document their work.

Luminet’s fraud scoring algorithms have also been enhanced to enable non-technical personnel to set up the system without lots of babysitting from IT pros. New provisions for minimizing false positives are also part of version 4.2.

This release also brings more custom reporting options and off-hours scheduling to support investigations and audits, Attachmate says. Customers also now have the option of encrypting the Luminet environment with a FIPS 140-2 validated cryptographic module, which will enable the software to be used by government agencies and contractors.

“Internal fraud instigated by employees within organizations in vertical markets such as financial institutions, government, and health care continues to be a major challenge costing companies billions of dollars,” Tom Bice, director of product marketing and management for Attachmate, says in a press release. “In addition to ensuring enterprises are audit-ready and in accordance with key compliance regulations, Luminet 4.2 provides a powerful solution to give organizations 100 percent visibility into data and user activity to take the guesswork out of application monitoring, providing the critical intelligence needed to take informed action.”
