  • Reader Feedback On Pocket Litter, On Spooky Action, and On A House of Many Windows

June 4, 2012 Timothy Prickett Morgan

    Victor:

My name is Chipper Miller and over the years I have enjoyed many of your articles. This most recent one regarding social media, As I See It: A House of Many Windows, was spot on. I have a friend at church and she says her daughter is really isolated due to Facebook, the computer, etc.

Again, thank you for your contributions. One of my favorites was Out of the Blue: Uncivil Action, which very much described a situation I had been in. Two co-workers (one was an owner) were very hostile and vicious, and I was beginning to feel like the tree described in the article. I was very much reminded of your article when this situation was happening. Another of my favorites was As I See It: When the Flame Dies, which you wrote at a time when I was experiencing burnout.

    –Chipper

    Howdy, Victor:

Your ability to focus your erudition, wide-reading, and sensayuma into an article like the latest, As I See It: Spooky Action at Great Distance, is really a great gift! Most interesting.

Yet we both know it’s not my job to praise your happy marriage of content and style, but to pick at minor word confusions or grammar errors that no one else is anal-retentive even enough to notice.

The April 16 column, As I See It: Pocket Litter, should have had the underwear and Times Square bombers eluding the agency’s attention, not alluding (to) it. Also the second sentence should have alluded to a project courtesy of us the taxpayers, not we taxpayers. I know it sounds like an elementary grammar error, but actually what you wrote is. “We” is the subject (nominative) pronoun, and all other cases use “us”. (Similarly a lot of folks will write things like: “He thanked Victor and I.” This is just horrible, and it is essentially the same error.)

I apologize, but I just couldn’t bring myself to write, two weeks ago, regarding such trivial nitpicking, but this week’s column was so enjoyable and interesting, it gave me a cover!

    Regards, and I’m a-watching you.

    –Peter
