  • SkyView Security Now Monitoring Vision Portal

    July 23, 2012 Dan Burger

Prominent high availability vendor Vision Solutions has teamed with SkyView Partners, an influential player in the IBM midrange security arena, to tighten the screws on Vision’s portal offering and place more control and manageability within the view of one console.

The integration takes place on Vision Solutions Portal (VSP), a single, browser-based, point of control for monitoring and managing alerts and notifications on Power Systems servers running IBM i as well as AIX through Vision’s MIMIX Global, which manages MIMIX clusters and hybrid IBM i disk-based clustering environments. It is also integrated into Vision’s iOptimize system utilization console on MIMIX Availability.

In both integration instances, SkyView’s Policy Minder adds automated security compliance monitoring and reporting only for the IBM i environment. While earlier this year, SkyView released Policy Minder for AIX, this does not come into play in these Vision product integrations.

Policy Minder was introduced in 2005 to assist IBM i shops automate security policy monitoring. Without a tool like Policy Minder, compliance with security policies and regulations is a labor intensive process.

The benefit to system administrators who are minding the high availability environment is the convenient view of security compliance checks, including showing that those checks have been successful or that automated fix-it functions have completed normally. This can be accomplished through the browser-based interface that is part of MIMIX Global. If problems arise, visual alerts notify the operator and they can quickly investigate the issue from within SkyView Policy Minder. Because Vision Solutions Portal is designed as a daily use console to detect issues and give greater control over the IBM i operating environment, integrating with SkyView’s Policy Minder places additional focus on the issue of security compliance.

“Security compliance tends to be a fire drill,” says SkyView Partners president Carol Woodbury in a statement announcing the integration of the two products. “When audit-time approaches, everyone scrambles to test processes and make sure everything’s in place. Integrating into a daily use tool like Vision Solution Portal changes that dynamic and security compliance becomes a daily routine and discipline.”

The lid is kept on chaos and confusion because system security-related events and the tools needed to recover from server failures are presented in the same console.

“This interlock will offer IT organizations a streamlined approach to complying with demanding Service Level Agreements,” said Alan Arnold, chief technology officer, Vision Solutions in the same statement.

General availability of this offering is set for September 1.
