    The history of indicators pre-dates even the earliest versions of RPG and takes us all the way back to the old tabulating machines, perhaps even earlier depending on how broad a definition one uses. What is without doubt, though, is that indicators in the sense of *INnn and *INLR were introduced to the RPG language as a vehicle for translating those old tabulator board programs.

  • RJS Strikes Again

    For the second time in two months, IBM i document management software provider RJS Software Systems has acquired a software development firm in the Twin Cities area.

    Last week, RJS announced it bought EpicScience, a St. Paul-based managed services company specializing in IT support, network administration, and custom program development.

    The 20-year-old company provided hosting services for a range of servers and networking gear. It also provided custom development and integration services.

    “We look forward to adding our IT experience to the RJS team and are excited to offer our skills and services to RJS Software’s broad customer base,” EpicScience

  • Global IT Spending to Hit $3.6 Trillion, IDC Says

    Backed by strong sales of business software in the first half of 2012, global IT spending is on pace to reach $1.9 trillion for the year, a 6 percent increase over total spending in 2011, IDC said last week.

    IDC said that better than expected sales of software by businesses looking to boost efficiency, as well as strong showings in storage, networking, and mobile device sales, helped prop up the global IT market during the first six months of the year, as sales of PCs, servers, peripherals and telecom gear lagged.

  • Rocket Ships New Release of PASSPORT Web to Host

    Rocket Software last month announced the availability of a new version of its Web-based terminal emulation software, PASSPORT Web to Host 2012. Rocket says the new release of the former Zephyr product runs on Windows 8 and has an “updated look-and-feel that is compatible” with Microsoft Office applications.

    Rocket acquired Zephyr and its PASSPORT lines of products earlier this year to bolster its existing line of emulators, which included the BlueZone products obtained with its Seagull Software acquisition in 2006.

  • Wholesaler Mobilizes IBM i App with Help from Profound Logic

    WinWholesale, a Dayton, Ohio-based conglomerate of more than 520 wholesale companies, has mobile-enabled its homegrown IBM i-based ERP system with Profound Logic Genie. With the capability to access the ERP system through an iPad, the company now has an interface that is suitable for the 21st century.

    WinWholesale is a collection of wholesale distributors of plumbing and heating supplies, including pipes, valves, fittings, pumps, refrigeration, and air conditioning equipment. The company has equity stakes in 470 companies displaying the “Win” prefix and another 70 under Noland Company.

  • French Logistics Firm Taps CCSS for Server Monitoring

    Geodis, Europe’s fourth-largest logistics provider, has adopted systems management software from CCSS to help it operate its IBM i environment. The French firm’s replacement of homegrown monitoring programs with QSystem Monitor and QMessage Monitor has enabled it to deliver better service and reliability with its IBM i servers, CCSS reports.

    Geodis is a 30,000-person logistics services provider that operates around the globe. The company’s European trucking division, Geodis BM, maintains a data center in Mery, France, that is responsible for operating and supporting the transportation and warehouse management systems that are used by about 5,000 employees across its own division

  • Real Vision Bolsters Mobile App with Useful New Features

    Real Vision Software, the developer of the Real Vision Imaging (RVI) content management application for the IBM i OS, has added several new features to its mobile app. The new features tie into RVI running on the IBM i server, and will help field workers make better use of their Apple‘s iOS devices as they service customer accounts. The company has also unveiled versions of the mobile app that run on Android and Windows Mobile 7.

  • Linoma Goes ‘Virtual’ with GoAnywhere Services 3.0

    The managed file transfer (MFT) features are coming fast and furiously for Linoma Software these days. Just a few weeks after releasing GoAnywhere Services version 2.8, the company this week is expected to announce the general availability of version 3.0, which adds new features such as support for virtual folders, network file shares, and sending invitations to other users to use the product. Linoma also announced that the entire GoAnywhere suite has been certified for Windows Server 2012.

  • Zend Expects Biggest PHP Confab Yet with ZendCon ’12

    The PHP world will descend upon Santa Clara, California, next month for the eigth annual ZendCon conference, hosted by Zend Technologies. Zend anticipates its biggest show yet, with close to 1,000 attendees expected to hear about the latest enhancements to the language by PHP gurus, and to learn about the latest product updates, such as Zend Framework 2.   • EVault Delivers Backup Flexibility with Release 7

    Organizations that use EVault‘s online backup and recovery service are now able to keep replicas of their data in more places as part of new product architecture launched last week with EVault 7. Specifically, EVault overcame technical limitations that kept customers from keeping copies of their data on site, while also storing copies with EVault or a service provider partner. EVault 7 also brings a new social media-type user interface aimed at boosting collaboration.
