  • Corus360 Launches Data Vaulting Solution Called Vault360

    May 21, 2013 Alex Woodie

Corus360 last week announced a data vaulting offering for servers running IBM i, Windows, Linux, and AIX operating systems. With Vault360, customers back up their servers over the network to Corus360’s data center, which can also provide recovery services if needed.

Corus360 is no stranger to disaster recovery (DR) offerings. The Atlanta, Georgia, VAR to IBM, HP, EMC, Dell, and Hitachi runs its own division called RES-Q that is devoted to providing all types and sizes of DR and business resiliency offerings for customers running a variety of business systems.

Data vaulting has been on the list of DR services from RES-Q for some time, along with data replication and high availability (HA); hot site, warm site, and drop-ship services; workgroup services (including temporary office space, call center facilities, and temporary and permanent staffing); and DR testing. This broad level of DR and business continuity (BC) services makes RES-Q an alternative to the likes of IBM Business Continuity and Recovery Services (BCRS) and Sungard.

To that end, the announcement of Vault360 last week was more about launching a new brand than anything else. The new Vault360 offering naturally follows from Corus360’s recent launch of PowerCloud360, a private cloud offering that allows customers to buy IBM i processing power over the network.

According to Corus360, its vaulting offering includes data de-duplication to reduce the bandwidth load, and encryption to protect the security of the data. Customers can initiate Vault360 transfers via a self-service interface, providing them with an easy way to restore files without the hassle of mounting tapes.

Vault360 customers have the choice of storing their backups in the PowerCloud360, located in Corus360’s 30,000-square-foot data center in Atlanta, or in a location of their own choosing.

It’s not clear what kind of technology is powering Vault360 and whether it requires translating EBCDIC data into ASCI, which is something that concerns IBM i DR experts. The company did not respond to questions before this newsletter’s deadline.
