  • Reader Feedback On Silver Anniversary For Silverlake

Timothy, great article! As always you nailed the message! Thank you!

    AS/400: Is it 25th or 35th Anniversary?

    Sirs hello. How are you?

I am a steady follower of The Four Hundred. And as an IBM retiree, I really like it. I worked in IBM in many functions such as a systems engineer and as a manager. I joined IBM as a systems engineer in 1980 and was assigned to the System/38. You know it was announced in 1978. As far as I remember it was first sold in 1979 but for me the announcement date is 1978.

Today, somebody who learned the System/38 in 1978 can use and run Power i in nearly in all system functions. Of course, some command names are different and many new functions are added during the long time frame, but main idea is there. So why does IBM not call it the 35th year but instead 25th? I do not understand.

Is there any other system out there that lasted 35 years and is still in use in more than 150,000 customers worldwide?

Incidentally, after I had an early retirement from IBM, I worked at two Turkish customers and in one of them my team and I installed one of the biggest applications of SAP in the world on AS/400 machines. It is Ulker Group who bought Godiva in 2008. So I know the customer side and their views on AS/400 as well.

Please keep up with the good work you are doing.

    Best Regards,

–Bilge Karakimseli, IBM and Ulker Retiree

Thanks much, and it is my pleasure to do my part. It really is that simple and pure and good.

    –TPM
