  • Where Do I Find These IBM i Licensed Products?

    April 30, 2014 Hey, Joe

I’m installing third-party software on my IBM i. The vendor documentation lists out the following IBM i licensed programs as pre-requisites for installation.

    • 5722-SS1–OS/400 – Directory Services
    • 5722-JV1–Java Developer Kit 1.5 or higher
    • 5722-AC3–Crypto Access Provider 128-bit for AS/400

I can’t find any of these products in my IBM i licensed program list. How do I make sure I have these features? I’m running i 6.1.

    –Steve

Because of the way IBM does things combined with some changes to the i operating system over the years, there’s some confusion as to where and how each of these products is included in the operating system. But the good news is that you probably already have each of these pre-requisites installed. Here’s the rundown on how to look for and find these products on your system.

First off, this must be an old vendor document because IBM no longer uses 5722-xxx numbers to refer to licensed programs. In IBM i 6.1, IBM uses 5761-xxx to designate the feature is a 6.1 licensed product. In i 7.1, Big Blue uses 5770-xxx for its licensed product names.

You can view your installed licensed products either through the green-screen or through the System i Navigator product (OpsNav) that comes with IBM i Access for Windows 6.1. To see your installed licensed products in OpsNav, open the Configuration and Service→Software→Installed Products node in OpsNav. You’ll see a screen similar to the following appear.

    Figure 1

    Click graphic to enlarge.

Pre-IBM i 6.1, the 5722-SS1 product (Directory Services option) was responsible for items such as Kerberos, IBM’s SecureWay Directory Version 3.2 compatibility, some Lightweight Directory Access Protocol functions (LDAP), and a few other items. It used to be listed as option 32 of 5722-SS1 but Directory Services migrated to the base operating system in later versions. So you don’t have to worry about Directory Services, since you’re already running IBM i 6.1.

The 5722-AC3 product (Crypto Access Provider 128-bit for AS/400) was an old licensed product that the operating system used for encryption. But like Directory Services, IBM incorporated 5722-AC3 into the operating system as of IBM i V5R4Mx (the old i5/OS operating system). Sometimes you’ll even still see 5722-AC3 in your licensed programs list but that’s usually because the product was never removed when the system was upgraded to 6.1. IBM i 6.1 and 7.1 don’t use 5722-AC3 for encryption, even if the product is still on the system. That support has migrated to the OS.

So you don’t have to worry about installing any additional software for encryption. However, if you’re working with banking or credit cards, be aware that some of the newer software is incorporating 256-bit encryption. So check with your credit card or banking provider to see what if any, requirements there are for moving to 256-bit encryption in the future.

Which leads us to 5722-JV1, the Java development kit 1.5 (JDK) for IBM i. IBM doesn’t specifically offer a licensed product for JDK 1.5. Rather this functionality is included in IBM i licensed product 5761-JV1 option 7, Java Developer Kit 5.0. So if you have 5761-JV1 option 7 installed under IBM i 6.1, you’ll be covered for JDK 1.5.

Finding Product Licensing On The Green Screen

You can also find all this information on the green screen, if you don’t want to use OpsNav. From a command line, type in GO LICPGM to access this Work with Licensed Programs menu.

    Figure 1

    Click graphic to enlarge.

Take option 10 off this menu (Display installed licensed programs) to view your installed packages. You’ll see a screen that looks like this.

    Figure 1

    Click graphic to enlarge.

You can look up your installed programs off this screen. The initial screen shows you the installation status of all your products (*COMPATIBLE = works with your OS, *INSTALLED = installed on your system but may not be compatible, etc.). Press the F11 key once to display the installed release of each listed product. Press the F11 key a second time to display the option number of each product or feature installed.

Both OpsNav and green screen work fine for viewing which licensed products and what versions you have on your system. You can use either one to look up the information we’ve talked about here.
