iFD Goes Mobile with iSign Signature Capture

The concept of a pen and paper is becoming increasingly foreign in our mobile world. Need to capture some information while on the go? That’s what tablets are for. One software vendor that’s signing up for the new iPad world is inFORM Decisions (iFD), which last week unveiled iSign, a new IBM i-based signature capture solution for mobile devices. iSign is an HTML-based app that allows users to capture signatures from the comfort of smartphones or tablets. The software works by digitally capturing signatures from the touchscreen of any mobile device loaded with a Java-enabled Web browser. The software then applies the signature to the business document, such as an invoice, bill of lading, proof of delivery, or patient record. In addition to improving the business document workflow by making it electronic, the software eliminates the need to print and carry large documents. This makes the product a good potential investment for organizations that are trying to “go green.”
To sign their name, users first select a document from the queue, sign the document (using either a stylus or their finger), then save the document on the device. The signed document is then uploaded to the document store or content management system, where it can be retrieved. The document can also be printed or emailed from the mobile device, iFD says. There are dozens of potential uses for iSign in the distribution, healthcare, retail, manufacturing, and financial services industries. Banks could use the technology to avoid lugging around 100-page-plus documents during mortgage signings, while insurance adjusters could use it to expedite claims processing in the field. The signatures captured by iSign are legally binding per the federal government’s 2001 Electronic Signatures in Global and National Commerce Act (ESIGN), inFORM Decisions president Dan Forster says. “The federal ESIGN Act authorizes the use of electronic signatures as legally binding, providing vendors the significant benefit of reducing the amount of paper they use and store,” Forster says in a press release. Signatures captured by iSign can be stored in any document management system, inFORM says. However, the company would love for customers to store iSign documents using its own iView document management system, which runs natively on the IBM i server. When used with iView, users can search for signed documents and retrieve them from the comfort of a Web browser. The software can also easily interface with ERP systems, the company says.
