  • S4i Goes IASP with Document Management Tool for HA Protection

    August 19, 2014 Alex Woodie

S4i Systems is now supporting independent auxiliary storage pools (IASPs) with S4i Express, its electronic document management and distribution tool for the IBM i OS. Running S4i Express within an IASP will give customers new options in the area of disaster recovery (DR), the company says.

S4i Express is a native IBM i program that helps reduce users’ reliance on pre-printed forms while transitioning them to paperless business processes. The software monitors IBM i print queues, processes the output using report-segmenting or bundling rules, converts it into PostScript, PDF, HTML, RTF, CSV, or plain text format, and then distributes it electronically (via e-mail, fax, FTP, or the Web), or prints or archives it for safe keeping. S4i Systems can also capture paper-based documents by integrating the OMR, OCR, and ICR capabilities of its business partner, Kofax, into an S4i Express implementation.

Earlier this summer the San Clemente, California, company announced a new release of S4i Express, dubbed PTF38, that added support for running the software in an IASP. This move allows customers to enable customers to protect S4i Express with IBM‘s PowerHA high availability software and perform fast failovers during emergencies.

“This significant release provides customers with more options for expedited disaster recovery and greater flexibility in the location which their documents and data can be stored,” the company says. “Housing an application like the S4i Express repository [in PowerHA] means that in a disaster event, the failover can be handled in minutes and without manual intervention.”

S4i Systems has had a number of big IBM i customers as S4i Express customers over the years, including the casino company Harrah’s, which used S4i Express to manage reports generated from three iSeries servers, according to a case study on S4i’s website. The company has also served Big Lots and Staples with its storage management and optimization tool, DASD-Plus.
