  • IBM Drops Tech Refreshes for IBM i 7.1 and 7.2

    October 7, 2014 Alex Woodie

Just before this issue of Four Hundred Stuff went to press yesterday IBM announced technology refreshes for both IBM i 7.1 and 7.2. At first glance, the two updates appear to carry similar features, including native support for REST-based Web services.

We all expected IBM to make IBM i-related announcements during its Enterprise2014 conference, which is taking place this week in Las Vegas. IBM normally makes big announcements on Tuesdays, but for whatever reason this time it dropped the big news on Monday.

The big news with IBM i 7.1 Technology Refresh 9 (TR9) and IBM i 7.2 TR1 appears to be the new IBM i Integrated Web Services Server (IWS), which gives the platform support for REST-based Web services. This would be a major upgrade for the platform and the developers writing Web applications that run on it. REST-based APIs have become the de facto standard for integrating applications on the Web, and have largely replaced SOAP and other more complicated methods.

There are a number of other enhancements in the announcement letters, which we’ll go through with a fine-toothed comb in future issues of this newsletter. IT Jungle‘s own Dan Burger is on the scene in Las Vegas and will be bringing us first-hand accounts of the show.

In the meantime feel free to check out the announcements. For IBM i 7.1 TR9, see United States Software Announcement 214-399. For IBM i 7.2 TR1, see United States Software Announcement 214-418.
