  • IBM i Gets New MQ Security Options

    October 21, 2014 Alex Woodie

The latest Technology Refreshes for IBM i versions 7.1. and 7.2 brought lots of good stuff in the Web integration department, including support for REST Web services and Node.js. But IBM‘s IBM i updates also brought good old fashioned message queue-based integration with support for the latest release of IBM’s IBM MQ.

The version 8 release of IBM MQ–the new name for the product that formerly went by MQSeries and WebSphereMQ–was unveiled back in April. But as part of its early October announcements, IBM also announced that IBM i 7.1 TR9 and 7.2 TR1 support IBM MQ for Multiplatforms version 8.

One of the big enhancements in MQ 8.0 is support for alternative authentication mechanisms–namely LDAP directories–instead of requiring users to use the native operating system authentication system. This will help to reduce the administration of defining and removing users, especially across multiple systems, the company says.

Version 8 also includes support for using DNS host names instead of IP addresses. Use of IP addresses continues to be best practice, IBM says, “but users now have the choice of either approach, which can simplify matters when machines move IP addresses.”

IBM MQ 8 also brings a more flexible security configuration of a queue manager. “A queue manager can now have multiple certificates, each signed by a different certificate authority,” IBM says. “This will now enable a single queue manager to communicate with different partners, each of whom uses a different certificate authority, simply by controlling this through channel definitions.”

IBM MQ for Multiplatforms 8 became available May 23. For more info, see United States Software Announcement 214-177.
