  • Changes Ahead For IT Jungle In 2015

December 8, 2014 Timothy Prickett Morgan

We are closing out one year, and looking forward to another one. It is hard to believe that The Four Hundred has been around since the summer of 1989, and that writing this newsletter was my first real job out of college. We have changed a lot over the years, and we must still be learning because we are still changing.

You will notice a few changes as 2015 comes around on the guitar. First, we are moving to a wider column format for stories that is reflective of the higher resolution screens that most PCs and mobile devices have these days. And if your eyes are as tired as mine, you will probably appreciate that we are bumping up the font size a little bit, too. Yes, you can zoom in with your web browser to make the font larger, and I often do that on a lot of sites, but most sites are now starting with larger fonts from the get-go, and this makes sense given the state of monitors and screens. The advertisements will be a little bigger, too, and my advice is for you not to complain, but to engage with our sponsors, who pay the bills around this joint and who make our strategic, tactical, and technical material possible.

Some other changes. First, we are merging The Four Hundred and Four Hundred Stuff and Alex Woodie and I will be co-editing the combination, which will run under The Four Hundred moniker. Way back in the dawn of time, when we got together after the collapse of Midrange Computing magazine, IT Jungle replicated the division between the technical and products magazines that our former employer had. This made sense initially, but over time it has become clear that a mix of content better suits the news cycle and the readers. There are times when IBM makes announcements on a Tuesday or Wednesday, which we cannot get into a publication until the next week’s cycle. So we will publish one issue of The Four Hundred on Mondays, as always, and then another one every other Wednesday with timing shifting for IBM announcements when necessary on those Wednesdays. You do not need to do anything to continue to receive your subscription; we will take care of it on our end.

With the second issue of The Four Hundred coming on Wednesdays, we need to shift Four Hundred Guru, our tech tips newsletter, and therefore it will move to every other Tuesday. We are working on some changes to this publication as well, but they are not quite done so I can’t spill the beans yet. Four Hundred Monitor, our weekly wrap up publication, continues to come out on Thursdays. We never have published on Fridays, and I see no reason to start now in 2015.
