  • IBM Delivers Tech Preview for iAccess on Mobile Devices

    December 9, 2014 Alex Woodie

    As part of the launch of IBM i 7.2 way back in May, IBM promised us a new “mobile perspective” for the IBM i Access for Web product that would allow systems administrators to manage the server from the mobile comfort of Android, iOS, or Windows devices. That tech preview was recently made available.

    IBM i Access for Web, you will recall, is an older client for IBM i, but one that IBM is intent on keeping around and improving, as opposed to other members of the “iAccess,” clan, like iAccess for Windows and iAccess for Linux, which are not getting upgrades. (The Java-based iAccess Client Solution, or ACS, offering is the go-to flagship offering for full-featured administration, but it’s not suitable for mobile devices.)

    “A mobile solution for accessing IBM i is now available as a technology preview,” IBM says on its IBM i Access website at www-03.ibm.com/systems/power/software/i/access/mobile.html. “Powered by IBM i Access for Web (5770XH2), you can now access IBM i resources from any mobile device that supports a browser.”

    The tech preview of the mobile perspective of IBM i Access for the Web (for the lack of a better name) lets admins do a bunch of work-related stuff on their smartphones while not playing Candy Crush, including:

    • Viewing and managing IBM i jobs, messages, output queues, files, and printers;
    • Viewing PTFs and PTF Groups;
    • Viewing, adding, inserting, and updating database records;
    • Building, running, and saving SQL statements with an SQL wizard;
    • Starting one or more 5250 emulation sessions;
    • Extracting data from a variety of IBM i resources into a table;
    • and distributing and managing files to other users.

    The tech preview, as previously mentioned, is provided as part of the version 7.2 release of IBM i Access for Web, which works with IBM i 6.1 through 7.2. For more info about the mobile perspective and screenshots, check out IBMer Dawn May’s recent column at IBM’s Systems Magazine’s website.

    [Live Webinar] Rewrite your Synon in Java? It could be… a mistake!

    Converting from Synon CA 2E to a modern language? There are many good reasons to take this step. Beyond the critical shortage of Synon skills, applications developed in this 4GL environment can no longer take advantage of key technology advances in the IBM i operating system. And though a leader in its day, the Synon CASE tool is incompatible with modern DevOps practices and concurrent development.

    Do you think the best way to move away from Synon CA 2E is by rewriting everything in Java?

    Think again. A full rewrite is risky, expensive, and slow — often leading to years of redevelopment and countless functional regressions.

    Join Philippe Magne, CEO of ARCAD Software and Ray Bernardi, senior solution architect to learn why a conversion to Free Form RPG is a risk-free and high-performance option that leverages the architecture of the original Synon application – retaining all the reliability and security advantages of the host platform.

    In our Webinar, we will share a secure, automated migration path for business applications developed in Synon CA 2E:

    • 100% automated conversion to modern Free Form RPG and DDL (SQL)
    • Guaranteed conversion accuracy with test automation process
    • Possible modernization of the user interface during the project
    • Risk free, fixed price Modernization as a Service (MaaS)
    • Modern full DevOps framework for delivery

    Leverage the competitive advantage within your Synon application.
