IBM i PTF Guide, Volume 19, Number 11
March 22, 2017 Doug Bidwell
The IBM i PTF Guide has a lot of meaty stuff this week. So brace yourselves. First, there are new Cumes (Cumulative updates) for IBM i V7R2 and V7R3; for V7R2 is it is C7068720 and for V7R3 it is C7061730. Also, Tech Refreshes are out for V7R2 and V7R3 – TR6 on V7R2 and TR2 on V7R3 – and these are out a week earlier than expected.
Some words of caution on installing these. As we pointed out last week, if you are two more TR levels behind the level you want to go to – for example, if you are on TR2 on V7R2 and you want to put on the latest TR, which is TR6, consult with IBM Support first because you may need to order the Resave and “slip the LIC” before applying the Cume. If you don’t know what that means, you need to ask for help.
Another word of caution. IBM’s Preventive Service Planning (PSP) documents for the contents of Cumes and Groups is not keeping up with announcements and the availability of the PTFs. Our advice is to download, but not apply, PTFs until documentation supporting what you download is available. IBM is aware of this inconsistency and is working on it. Resaves (also referred to as “Respins”) are available from ESS (entitled Systems Support). The latest should be available there for your convenience shortly after General Availability.
All this new stuff in one week made us curious as to whether IBM had also released the new version of Access Client solutions, but nope, not yet. But it sounds like it is worth waiting for!
One last thing: Coming soon, there are a few neat new download and apply options available from IBM pertaining to PTFs and their management. We are still navigating the changing landscape of IBM support documents and PSP info, but will be testing the new capabilities soon and sharing them with you. . . at the very least it will provide options for how we can deal with the World of Fixes.
