  • Clementine 12.0 to Support i5/OS Later This Year

    January 29, 2008 Alex Woodie

The version 12 release of Clementine, the data mining software developed by SPSS, will be adapted to support the i5/OS operating system later this year, the company confirmed recently.

SPSS bills Clementine as a data mining workbench that enables organizations to develop and deploy predictive data mining models. With Clementine’s predictive models sifting through an organization’s data and identifying patterns, managers can gain greater insight into the organizations’ business and make smarter decisions.

Clementine is commonly used in financial services organizations to predict which customers are good investments and which ones are likely to end up with outstanding balances. SPSS also reports a wireless phone company using Clementine to improve their customers’ satisfaction, thereby increasing retention rates. Governmental agencies and scientific institutions have also used Clementine to uncover hidden patterns in large data stores.

Two weeks ago, SPSS launched Clementine 12.0, which introduced new features designed to increase a user’s capability to scare out the patterns. For example, a new automated modeling feature helps the user identify the best analytic models to use, and combines multiple predictions into one result set, which boosts accuracy, the company says. This release also introduces new visual design interface for adding graphics into reports.

Version 12 also introduces a new predictive text mining feature that allows users to extract little jewels of knowledge from unstructured data sources, such as e-mail, blogs, RSS feeds, and surveys. Cablecom, a Swiss cable television company, has already put the new text mining option to use in analyzing its customer retention. “Our organization has been able to better understand and quantify reasons for customer churn,” says Federico Cesconi, head of customer insight and retention. “We’ve uncovered concepts and relationships in text that would be too costly–or even impossible–to detect by any other methods.”

Clementine 12.0 is available now for Windows. Support for i5/OS is expected with the release of Clementine 12.0.1 in March, an SPSS spokesperson says. Currently, SPSS supports Clementine version 11, which it rolled out last January, in the PASE runtime environment of i5/OS V5R3 and V5R4. For more information, visit www.spss.com/clementine.
