ACOM Unveils Secure Laser Check Printer

Companies concerned about the security of their MICR check printing operations may want to check out ACOM Solutions latest laser check printer. The printer–a modified Xerox Phaser 3250 printer–offers enhanced security features like a three-way switch and security card that can disable check printing, enabling it to be used as a standard laser printer. ACOM’s new printer starts at $895 and is aimed at companies that need to print about 1,000 checks per month. What’s unique about the printer are the security features, such as the three-way switch that turns MICR on or off, or turns the printer off. Such switches are commonly found on check printers that cost thousands of dollars more, ACOM says. The other core security feature is a PCMCIA card slot that can be used to store the graphics and digitalized signatures that are necessary for printing a final check. Without this security card in hand, would-be check printers will not be able to print a signed check, thus providing a second layer of protection. In terms of tech specs, the black-and-white Xerox Phase 3250 prints at speeds up to 30 pages per minute and supports Postscript, PCL, and IBM print protocols and two-sided printing. It features an Ethernet port, prints at resolutions up to 1,200 dots per inch, and a lockable 250-sheet paper tray (expandable to include a second 250-sheet tray). ACOM vice president Sam Mikhail says the new Xerox laser printer is a “remarkable value” for companies in the mid-market. “Not only is it ideal for printing checks, but once the checks are printed it can be deployed for conventional laser printing simply by changing out the cartridge,” he says.
