  • Original Launches Overarching Tool for Quality Management

    June 22, 2010 Alex Woodie

Original Software last week unveiled a new automated quality management (AQM) product that that’s designed to help today’s development shops write cleaner code, and to do it faster and with more transparency and oversight than before. Called Qualify, the new product provides a centralized place to manage and report on the flow of work done by other tools used in the quality assurance (QA) process–including Original’s automated testing tools for i/OS applications–while providing better means for collaboration among QA stakeholders.

In the modern development shop, agility is the key. Gone are the days when a programmer or QA technician could

With Composer version 3, the vendor has added an extensible transaction document processing (TDP) framework that should make it easier to get up and running with sophisticated and automated workflows, particularly in electronic data interchange (EDI) environments. • Attachmate Emulator to Deploy Via App-V

    June 22, 2010 Alex Woodie

Attachmate is expected next month to deliver a new release of its Reflection emulator that can be deployed as a virtual application using Microsoft‘s desktop application virtualization technology. The vendor says deploying Reflection 2011 as an App-V object will reduce compatibility concerns, speed the deployment, and save customers money, especially during large roll-outs or updates of emulators.

Whether it’s a first-time roll-out or a re-fresh of an existing implementation, it is a big priority of all terminal emulation vendors (not just Attachmate) to simplify the deployment of emulators. Attachmate has the biggest base of emulation customers outside of IBM

  • Kisco Updates Amazon-Based Backup Utility

    June 22, 2010 Alex Woodie

Kisco Information Systems last week unveiled a new release of i-2-S3, its i/OS backup utility that uses Web-based storage from Amazon. With version 1.04, Kisco added several new reports that tell customers what they have backed up with the product. It also lowered the price.

Kisco unveiled i-2-S3 last October as a way for System i shops to protect their data by storing backups in a secure offsite location. The software includes a set of i/OS backup and restore commands that enable customers to save and recover their data using Amazon’s Simple Storage Service (S3) instead of a local

Nearly 20 different database management systems are supported by DBMoto, including IBM‘s DB2/400 and DB2 for Linux, Unix, and Windows (LUW);

  • Dancerace Taps CNX for i/OS Screen Modernization

    June 22, 2010 Alex Woodie

Dancerace, a UK provider of i/OS applications and data processing services, will utilize the Valence framework from CNX when it modernizes the next release of its flagship financial application.

Based in the city of Bath, Dancerace has been a strident supporter of the i/OS platform since it launched C3 in 1994. The company is bluntly honest on its Web site that C3, which is used by many the UK’s factoring and invoice discounting companies, is not a “Windows or so-called ‘thick client’ package that will make do for now and look pretty, but not really work reliably, or scale

  • IBM Shuffles the TM1 Deck

    June 22, 2010 Alex Woodie

IBM has been busy with TM1, the 64-bit in-memory business intelligence software product that it obtained with its Cognos acquisition. The company announced it will kill a mid-market version of the TM1 product this fall, while it simultaneously releases version 9.5.1 of the product.

On June 8, IBM announced that as of September, it would no longer market the “mid market starter edition” of IBM Cognos TM1, product number 5724-W49. Instead, customers will only be able to order the enterprise-strength version of the full Cognos Analytic tools under the Cognos TM1 name (which goes by the same product number).

Novum, the Irish manufacturer of refrigeration systems, has upgraded its i/OS-based System21 installation as part of the Flex Upgrade program offered by Infor, the software vendor announced recently.

The upgrade from System21 version 3 to Infor ERP System21 Aurora helped across many areas of Novum’s business, including customer order fulfillment processes, order-to-cash cycle times, and reporting and decision-making across the company, says Infor, which estimates its customer will recoup its investment within a year. • CYBRA Hopes for Big Uptick in RFID Spending

    June 22, 2010 Alex Woodie

CYBRA, a developer of barcode and radio frequency identification (RFID) solutions for the i/OS marketplace, recently announced that it expects sales of RFID solutions to increase by more than 25 percent this year, as worldwide demand for RFID solutions increases, particularly in the clothing industry.

In the mid-2000s, there was hardly a technology as over hyped as RFID. With Wal-Mart pushing an RFID mandate onto its suppliers, analysts predicted that the technology would fundamentally change how manufacturers, distributors, and retailers moved goods through the supply chain.

Despite the mandates, RFID never really took off. The per-unit cost of the
