  • How IBM i 7.4 Improves Security

    May 1, 2019 Alex Woodie

The unveiling of Db2 Mirror may have gotten the lion’s share of attention with last week’s introduction of IBM i enhancements. But IBM has also given its customer base some significant security upgrades with the new releases of IBM i, including enhancements to the Authority Collection and support for the latest over-the-wire encryption protocol.

“Our big things are around those two main themes – availability as well as security,” says Alison Butterill, IBM i product offering manager at IBM. “Those are the two main themes. But we have lots of things across the board.”

IBM gave customers significant new user-focused …

  • R Comes To i

    May 1, 2019 Alex Woodie

IBM is now officially supporting the language R with its IBM i operating system, the company announced last week. The open source language, which has long been a favorite of data scientists, statisticians, and others involved with scientific computing, gives IBM i an immediate boost when it comes to data mining and machine learning.

The R language was originally developed 25 years ago by a pair of computer science professors, Ross Ihaka and Robert Gentleman, at the University of Auckland, New Zealand. The software, which was developed largely in C and Fortran, was based largely on S, a programming language …

  • Original Refocuses on IBM i Test Automation

    May 1, 2019 Alex Woodie

Original Software never left the IBM i software market, though it might have seemed that way to some people. But thanks to a new website devoted to exploring issues, challenges, and solutions on the topic of IBM i test automation, the British software company is redoubling its efforts around the midrange platform.

“We really never un-engaged with it, to be fair,” says Original Software COO George Wilson says of IBM i. “We’ve kind of widened the radar a bit. That was probably 15 years ago. We didn’t want to limit ourselves to the IBM midrange marketplace. What we’ve just done …

Unless you are living under a rock (ha, ha), you probably have some concern about the planet and preserving it for future generations. Maybe you have a composter, or drive an electric car, or you recycle. Whatever your contribution might be, I like to think it helps. And it is nice to see that the planet is also on the radar of tech giants like IBM and Dell Computers, both of which have recently joined a challenge to make a commitment to sustainability. Find out more in our top stories below, and don’t forget to visit our calendar at the …

  • Deep Dive On IBM i 7.4 And IBM i 7.3 TR6 Hardware Limits

April 29, 2019 Timothy Prickett Morgan

As everybody knows by now, IBM has announced both the Technology Refresh 6 for IBM i 7.3 and the shiny new IBM i 7.4 release. We did a brief overview of these operating system releases in last Wednesday’s issue, concurrent with the launch and ahead of their respective May 10 and June 21 general availability dates, to put them into perspective. Now, it is time to get into the nuts and bolts and bits and bytes of what Big Blue has announced.

Rather than try to do it all in one story or possibly two, we are breaking it …

  • Club Alan: Seiden Signs Liam, Corners Youth Market

    April 29, 2019 Alex Woodie

The Seiden Group solidified its position in the futures market this month by signing the young British-born IBM i phenom Liam Allan to a long-term employment contact that will see him involved in training and open source development work, among other activities.

Allan’s signing with Seiden Group is a reunion of sorts for Allan and Alan Seiden, the company’s founder and CEO. Allan credits Seiden with roping him into the IBM i gig via Club Seiden, an intersectionalist group devoted to exploring emerging digital and social connections involving the IBM i operating system and the open source ecosystem.

  • Guru: Creating Excel Spreadsheets With Python

    April 29, 2019 Mike Larsen

Over the past several years, I’ve seen a growing demand to provide business data in Excel. Some shops are content to receive their data in .csv format and then manually apply formatting to make it presentable. Wouldn’t it be better if we could provide a spreadsheet that is already formatted?

In my opinion, the answer is yes. Most recently, I’ve been using PHP to accomplish this task. PHP works great for me, but I always like to have different options from which to choose. This is important to me because some shops may not have PHP installed. Based on that …

  • Mad Dog 21/21: In Memory of Hesh Wiener

April 29, 2019 Timothy Prickett Morgan

“Stop complaining. The only thing worse than writing so many obituaries is having one written about you. Let me assure you.”

If my friend and mentor, Hesh Wiener, were alive today, that is what he would say to me with a laugh. And of course, as always, Hesh, who had no intention of leaving this world quite yet, would have been right.

We have suffered our share of losses in the IBM midrange in recent years, and here at The Four Hundred, the publication that Hesh created in the wake of the inaugural June 21, 1988, AS/400 announcements. Hesh …
