  • Red Hat’s Ansible Automation Comes To IBM i

    August 3, 2020 Alex Woodie

Big Blue is now supporting IBM i with Ansible, the open source configuration management software developed by Red Hat. By including IBM i and AIX as a supported target in Ansible, companies that run IBM i will be able to remotely configure and manage IBM i and AIX servers using the same Ansible tools and techniques that they use to manage mainstream X86 and cloud server environments.

Ansible was created back in 2012 by Michael DeHaan, the author of the Cobbler provisioning server and co-author of the Fedora Unified Network Controller (Func) framework for remote administration. It’s been widely adopted …

  • Guru: What Do People Have Against Timestamps?

    August 3, 2020 Ted Holt

In my work I often see database tables and physical files with related date and time fields (columns). By related, I mean that the two fields together indicate a certain time on a certain date for a certain event. I have found these date/time pairs to be difficult to work with at times, so much so that I have come to prefer timestamps.

I wonder why database architects (I use the term loosely) specify separate date and time fields rather than a timestamp. Having done no scientific survey, I can only guess. I suspect that many tables date back …

  • How IBM Stacks Power Cloud Up Against AWS And Azure

August 3, 2020 Timothy Prickett Morgan

We have our own habits when it comes to thinking about bang for the buck, and it is refreshing sometimes to just think about how other companies think about it.

As part of the July 14 announcements now almost three weeks ago, IBM not only rolled out new entry Power9 machines with higher I/O bandwidth as well as utility style pricing for on-premises gear to lower capital expenditures. IBM also did a direct comparison of the Power Systems Virtual Server running on the IBM Cloud for a memory-heavy instance and then compared that to fat memory slices running on Amazon …

  • If You Can’t Get To The Tape, It Doesn’t Matter If It Is Dead Or Not

August 3, 2020 Timothy Prickett Morgan

The coronavirus pandemic has made most IT shops seriously re-evaluate a number of the technologies they have to maintain, operate, backup, and protect their mission-critical applications and their data. And the companies that have IBM i systems as their main platforms are no more insulated from these issues than those who picked other platforms – although it is safe to say that they have very good tools to help with all of the above, and in many cases, these tools are arguably better than – or identical to – what is available for Windows Server, Linux, or other platforms.

  • Power Systems Slump Is Not As Bad As It Looks

July 27, 2020 Timothy Prickett Morgan

Even for companies selling hand sanitizer, face masks, toilet paper, and shotguns, it is still a weird time to be in business just like it is for the rest of us. The Cognitive Systems division within IBM’s Systems group – what most people still call the Power Systems division – is no different.

Big Blue is certainly facing some strong headwinds as it has to get through more than another year before the Power10 rollout begins, and the Power9 machines have really been in the field two and a half years already if you count the launch of the Power …

  • Some Insight Into Utility Pricing On Entry Power Iron

July 27, 2020 Timothy Prickett Morgan

Two weeks ago, IBM announced a revamped lineup of entry Power9 systems, including a new single-core variant of the Power S922 server aimed at IBM i shops, and last week, we compared the performance and bang for the buck of this machine to other single-core systems for IBM i applications. This week, we complete the set by talking about that flexible, utility pricing that Big Blue started offering on big Power9 back in May and that is now available on dual-socket Power9 iron. The single-socket Power S914, as far as we know, is not eligible for this type of …

  • Guru: Creating PDF Documents With Python

    July 27, 2020 Mike Larsen

I’m often asked to create reports for my business partners. The format of the report depends on who made the request. If the financial team made the request, I may produce an Excel file. The CEO may want to report quarterly sales to their shareholders. In that case, I may produce a PDF using the company letterhead.

In a prior article, I showed how to create Excel files using Db2 tables. Now I’m going to show how to create PDF documents using Db2 tables.

This story contains code, which you can download here.

I always start by making …

  • Kisco Extends Two Factor Authentication To Green Screens

    July 27, 2020 Alex Woodie

Companies that still rely on 5250 greenscreens to get work done can now lock down those sessions with a new two-factor authentication feature recently delivered in Kisco Information Systems’ i2Pass offering. The New York company is also giving customers of its iEventMonitor solution new capabilities to automatically respond to error messages in a remote fashion.

Green screens, if you haven’t noticed, are not going away. Despite the ubiquity of Web and mobile interfaces for new development, there’s a large number of applications that require users to log into a 5250 terminal emulation session to get the job done. For companies …

  • IBM i PTF Guide, Volume 22, Number 30

    July 27, 2020 Doug Bidwell

As you know, IBM tweaked the entry part of the Power Systems lineup running Power9 processors, and The Four Hundred reported on this on announcement day, which was July 14.

There are some PTF angles to this, which Steve Will, the System i architect at Big Blue, explained thus: “On July 14, several new IBM Power Systems announcements are happening, and to support those announcements, the IBM i 7.4 TR2 PTF Group (SF99737 PTF Group Level 2) and the IBM i 7.3 TR8 PTF Group (SF99727 PTF Group Level 8) will be made available on July 17.” We have …

  • ARCAD Generates APIs From 5250 Screens

    July 22, 2020 Alex Woodie

Many IBM i shops want to modernize their 5250 applications by developing REST-based Web services and API extensions, but they face difficulties getting started. These organizations may want to check out ARCAD Software’s latest offering, ARCAD API, which takes much of the pain and complexity out of the API generation process.

REST-based APIs have become a standard method for exposing data and business logic to the outside world. There’s an abundance of ways that APIs can be used–pushing data to Web or mobile users, for example, or pulling data from a cloud-based CRM system. Just about any higher-level application function, …
