  • To Kill SEU Or Not Kill SEU – That Is The Question

    July 12, 2023 Alex Woodie

It was a simple question posed by Liam Allan on Ryver: Should IBM stop shipping SEU? The dozens of answers it generated exposed a stark divide when it comes to the use of legacy technology in the IBM i ecosystem and to what extent it’s okay for IBM to force its customers to adopt new technology.

There is no denying that IBM’s Source Entry Utility (SEU) is still in widespread use in the IBM i world. Statistics are tough to come by, but evidence suggests a majority of IBM i developers still use the greenscreen development tool for at least …

  • What Keeps IT Leaders Up At Night? Rocket Seeks Answers

    July 12, 2023 Alex Woodie

Want a tough job? Then consider becoming a CIO, who are under enormous pressure to use IT to help their businesses. To better gauge what’s keeping them up at night during a period of economic uncertainty, Rocket Software surveyed 275 senior IT leaders at large companies. The responses might surprise you.

July 12, 2023 Timothy Prickett Morgan

Neither Gartner nor IDC put out their quarterly server and storage reports for the public anymore, but IDC does still release a converged dataset that adds server and storage spending together and carves it up based on if it is spend on the clouds or for traditional – what we would call legacy – systems. The latest results are out for the first quarter of 2023, and there is what looks like a temporary stall in legacy system spending and it looks like it is going to get worse here in 2023 but return to growth in the coming years. …

  • IBM i PTF Guide, Volume 25, Number 28

    July 12, 2023 Doug Bidwell

It is still pretty quiet out there in when it comes to PTFs for the IBM i platform, excepting two important security vulnerabilities, one of which we reported on in Monday’s issue of The Four Hundred.

To reiterate, first we have Security Bulletin: IBM i is vulnerable to an attacker executing CL commands due to an exploitation of DDM architecture (CVE-2023-30990), which you can find out more about here. The IBM i PTF numbers for IBM i 5770-SS1 Base Operating System contain the fix for the vulnerability, as follows:

    IBM i Release	PTF Number
    7.5	SI83472
    7.4	SI83473
