  • System i Resellers Stalled by Power Systems Transition

April 28, 2008 Timothy Prickett Morgan

Under the best of circumstances, when hardware and software technology changes are modest, server product transitions can still be problematic. But sometimes, the changes are quite large, and this causes issues. Such was the case in the transition IBM did in 1993 and 1994 to the CISC-based AS/400 3XX, in 1995 with the jump to PowerPC chips with the AS/400 5XX boxes, in 2002 and 2003 with the Power4 iSeries 8XX machines, and now in 2007 and 2008 as IBM converges the System i and System p lines into the single Power Systems line.

  • SMB Is Going Global, and Collaboration Plays Big Role

    April 28, 2008 Dan Burger

A global economy brings with it a great opportunity to sell collaboration software, particularly to the small to mid size businesses in the United States. If you don’t believe it, just ask the collaboration software folks at IBM. They will help you connect the dots. Last week at the at the U.S. Small Business Administration’s National Small Business Week conference in Washington, D.C., Sean Poulley, vice president of IBM online collaboration services, outlined the challenges and opportunities for growth that small and mid size businesses (SMBs) will be facing in the next decade.

“Some of the little known facts

  • Gartner Says CRM and Security Software Markets Will Grow

April 28, 2008 Timothy Prickett Morgan

Whenever there is an economic slowdown, not every sector of the IT space sees decreased spending. Some areas seem to be immune to calls from the boardroom to cut spending because these technologies help the company retain customers, provide better or cheaper products or services, or even boost sales. And so it seems to be with both customer relationship management (CRM) and security software sales, according to the analysts at Gartner.

CRM is, of course, a decade-old extension of ERP systems that aims to keep better track of customers and allow companies to up-sell and cross-sell products and services

  • A Recycle Bin for the IFS (Sort Of)

    April 23, 2008 Hey, Ted

We inadvertently deleted an IFS file that was created today and therefore was not on the previous night’s backup. What I wouldn’t give for an IFS recycle bin! We can recreate the file, but I wonder, short of backing everything up every minute, if there is anything that I could have done to prepare for such a situation?

    -Chris

My sympathy, Chris. I hate it when that happens. As you point out, the IFS has no recycle bin, but there is a way you can delete a file from a directory without deleting it from disk. I’ll show you the

  • Performance Advice from a Mysterious Friend, Part 6

    April 23, 2008 Ted Holt

This is the last of the performance tips that I received from one of your fellow readers. I hope you’ve enjoyed the previous tips and found some of them useful as well.

Today’s advice: “Increase the journal recovery ratio from the default of 50,000 to 250,000.”

IBM’ers Larry Youngren and Chris Kindinger provide a thorough discussion of this topic at http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/abstracts/tips0625.html”. Although the discussion centers around V5R4, they also provide information for V5R3 and V5R2.

The journal recovery ratio has to do with the IPL process. The journal recovery ratio’s purpose is to limit the number of journal entries

  • What is INZSYS, and Why Should I Care?

    April 23, 2008 Hey, Joe

When we upgraded our i550 box from V5R3 to V5R4, we had to check for the completion of the Initialize System (INZSYS) command before we could do anything else after an IPL. What is the INZSYS command and why do I have to worry about it?

    –Jim

The Initialize System (INZSYS) command is a special command that i5/OS uses to perform initialization conversions during a software package installation. What you may not realize is that a licensed program installation (such as an i5/OS upgrade) really consists of two different steps.

    1. The licensed program part of the installation process
    2. The INZSYS

  • Industrial Strength Software Debuts DB2/400 Optimization Tools

    April 22, 2008 Alex Woodie

Industrial Strength Software, a provider of programmer utilities and change management tools based in Illinois, recently introduced two tools designed to help System i shops get the most performance out of DB2/400. The new tools, called the DBAnalyzer (DBA) and DBOptimizer (DBO), work together to identify inefficient database structures and to automatically optimize them for peak performance, thereby reclaiming disk space and processor turns.

DB2/400–officially known as DB2 for i5/OS (IBM hasn’t gotten around to renaming it yet)–is a very robust database, and is the core engine powering many i5/OS (i) applications. While it can be very powerful

  • Turning a System i into a Time Machine: Nippon Express and CCSS Show How It’s Done

    April 22, 2008 Greer Hahn

As the spectre of recession begins its inevitable and indiscriminate creep into boardrooms across the world, the attentions of CEOs begin to scan the body of the organization, looking for areas in which to trim the fat that might sustain them through the tough times. So how do IT managers justify and protect their existing budgets and prove their System i environment can punch above its weight? Simple–they turn their System i into a time machine.

Within the heart of any logistics organization beats a ticking clock–to say it was a time sensitive industry would be an understatement. Nippon Express

  • United Computer Group Sailing Smooth Through Rough Water

    April 22, 2008 Dan Burger

“Protecting Data for the SMB” could be the title of a book written by Jim Kandrac, president of UnitedComputer Group. The Brecksville, Ohio, company is doing quite well. According to Kandrac, its revenue for the first quarter of 2008 was up 198 percent compared to the same quarter in 2007. That’s pretty explosive stuff. When most companies are happy with status quo or small gains, where do numbers like 198 percent growth come from?

The key to this, Kandrac says, was the launch of Vault400 in September of 2006. Vault400 is an online backup and disaster recovery managed service.

  • Enterprise Features Gain Focus as MySQL 5.1 Nears Release

    April 22, 2008 Alex Woodie

The transformation of the MySQL database from open source curiosity to production-level workhorse continued this month with version 5.1, which adds several enterprise-level features. While MySQL 5.1–which is expected to ship before the end of June–has seen good reviews, the open source database’s owner, Sun Microsystems, has created controversy over its decision to make a new online backup feature available only to customers who pay for the enterprise version of the software.

With more than 200 million downloads, MySQL is the most popular open source database on the market. The company, which was acquired by Sun in January for
