  • More About SQL Correlation Names

    March 12, 2008 Hey, Ted

I hope my question is an easy one to answer. I have a file that stores the location of inventory in a warehouse. Location consists of a row (an aisle), column, and level. Why will an SQL UPDATE let me change the column and level, but not the row?

    –Scott

You can update the column like this:

    update qtemp/inventory
       set column=4
     where item = 'SL-701'

But updating the row gives you error SQL0104. (Token 4 was not valid. Valid tokens: ( : DAY CAST CHAR DATE DAYS HOUOUR LEFT TIME TRIM YEAR COUNT MONTH.)

    update qtemp/inventory
       set row=4
     where item

  • Admin Alert: A Much Quicker Way to Move System i Objects Between Partitions

    March 12, 2008 Joe Hertvik

In a recent article, I detailed how to use common i5/OS commands to easily transfer System i objects between partitions. After publication, several readers wrote to say that if you have a working SNADS network between your target and source partitions, transferring objects is incredibly easy if you just use the commands that come with IBM‘s free ObjectConnect licensed program. And you know something, they’re right! ObjectConnect is easier.

This week, I’ll review what ObjectConnect does for i5/OS object movement between systems, how to make sure that you have it installed on your machine, and how to use

  • Help/Systems Gives SEQUEL a Web Makeover

    March 12, 2008 Alex Woodie

A business intelligence system can have access to hundreds of terabytes of data, but if a user can’t find what she needs in a timely manner, the system has failed. To speed the absorption of BI data, many companies today are turning to graphical dashboards, which boil large amounts of data down into easy-to-comprehend graphics. Last week, Help Systems announced it has joined the ranks of the Web-based graphical dashboard vendors with a new release of its SEQUEL Web Interface offering.

Help/Systems has been in the business intelligence business since it purchased Advanced Systems Concepts nearly a year and a

  • Solidcore Supports i5/OS with Real-Time Change Control

    March 11, 2008 Alex Woodie

Solidcore Systems is now supporting the System i server with its collection of real-time change control and PCI compliance software, the company confirmed last week. While a formal announcement with IBM is weeks away, System i shops today can use Solidcore’s products to continuously monitor changes to their i5/OS servers, boost security, and help automate PCI compliance.

While it’s true that outside threats can impact the security and availability of your IT services, the fact is that the weather and Eastern European hackers can’t hold a candle to the level of damage that Bob the Midnight Operator can wreak on

    March 11, 2008 Alex Woodie

Vision Solutions last week announced that it’s supporting the new High Availability Solutions Manager (HASM) that IBM will include with the forthcoming release of i5/OS V6R1. With HASM support in Cluster1, the largest System i shops will have a single solution for managing their entire high availability environments, from logical replication all the way through hardware-based clustering solutions such as HASM.

When it becomes available with i5/OS V6R1 on March 21HASM will provide another way for System i shops to replicate data, objects, and resources as part of a high availability or disaster recovery program.

    HASM combines the so-called hardware-based

  • CodeGear Offers a Rational Alternative for System i Development

    March 11, 2008 Alex Woodie

Borland subsidiary CodeGear yesterday announced that it is reselling the Delphi/400 family of products, which was originally developed by SystemObjects. With the Delphi/400 and Delphi/400 for PHP offerings, CodeGear customers gain a way to develop Web- and Windows-based front ends to existing RPG and COBOL applications from within Delphi, Borland’s 4GL IDE–and also gain another alternative to IBM and its WebSphere and Rational development tools.

CodeGear was created in November 2006 when it was spun out of Borland’s developer tool division to continue to develop and support the Delphi, JBuilder, 3rdRail, Blackfish, Interbase, JGear, and Turbo products. While sales

To help streamline the decision making process, TDCI sells a piece of software called BuyDesign that makes a manufacturer or distributor “easy to do business with.” And now with the new iSeries Adapter, TDCI is making it easier to hook BuyDesign into i5/OS-based ERP systems.
