  • Avnet Elevates Hamada to CEO Position

March 21, 2011 Timothy Prickett Morgan

Master IT and electronic components distributor Avnet has promoted an insider to take over the day-to-day running of the company.

Roy Vallee, who is currently Avnet’s chief executive officer and chairman, will step away from the CEO position on July 4, yielding it to long-time Avnet insider Rick Hamada, who is currently the company’s president and chief operating officer. Vallee is sticking around to be executive chairman, and Hamada has been appointed to the Avnet board of directors.

Avnet said that the move was the culmination of a multi-year CEO succession plan. It is not clear if the company considered

  • Dataram Shrinks Losses in Q3 of Fiscal 2011

March 21, 2011 Timothy Prickett Morgan

Clone server memory maker and storage upstart Dataram has been tightening its belt and moving closer to profitability in its third quarter of fiscal 2011 ended January 31.

In the quarter, Dataram’s overall sales fell by 3.3 percent, to $11.9 million. With research and development, stock compensation, and amortization costs all radically cut back, the company was able to cut losses in the quarter back to $839,000, which was a whole lot better than the $6.54 million loss it had in the year-ago period.

For the nine months of fiscal 2011 ended in January, Dataram’s revenues are up by 10.6

  • Raz-Lee Feeds IBM i Data into RSA SIEM

    March 18, 2011 Alex Woodie

RSA Security recently certified IBM i security software from Raz-Lee Security to feed log data into its enVision security information and event management (SIEM) offering. The integration gives IBM i shops a proven way to keep one of the security world’s most adopted and well-respected SIEM devices in tune with events occurring on the IBM i server.

Earlier this month, Raz-Lee announced that RSA had certified iSecurity version 11.4 to translate IBM i data into the Syslog format, and feed it into the enVision SIEM, an enterprise-class security device that’s been adopted by about 1,600 customers. The integration involves various

  • Duplicating CPYF Function Using SQL

    March 16, 2011 Skip Marchesani

There are a few questions that I am frequently asked re: SQL that are interrelated. First, can SQL be used to duplicate the function found in the native CPFY (copy file) command? Next, can SQL be used to duplicate a table similar to the function found in the native CRTDUPOBJ (create duplicate object) command? And lastly, can a field reference file be used as the source for column definitions with the CREATE TABLE SQL statement? The answer is a qualified YES to all three questions, and it is relatively easy to do.

From a SQL perspective, I break the CPYF

  • Circumventing Integer Division

    March 16, 2011 Hey, Ted

My computer seems to have forgotten how to divide. When I divide one value by another, using SQL, the answer is always exactly one or zero. What gives?

    –RPG Professional

This took a little while, but we finally found his problem. First, the background.

Assume a database file with three fields: customer ID, the number of orders from that customer, and the number of shipments to the customer.

    select CustID, Orders, Shipments
      from Summary

    CUSTID ORDERS SHIPMENTS
         1 75 25
         2 10 16
         3 20 0
         4 8 8

Now let’s add a ratio to the query to gauge order

  • Admin Alert: Corralling i/OS Storage Hogs, Part 2

    March 16, 2011 Joe Hertvik

Last week, I published part 1 of my series detailing the seven biggest culprits of unnecessary i/OS storage consumption. This week, let’s continue with the remainder of my list and see what you can do to keep your storage problems under control.

Again, the Seven Sinister Storage Hogs

While not inclusive of all the ways processes can consume disk on your machine, I usually focus my attention on the big seven culprits of unnecessary storage consumption when an issue appears on one of my iSeries, System i, or Power i systems.

  • When Disaster Strikes: Maxava Discusses the Christchurch Earthquake

    March 15, 2011 Simon O'Sullivan

Editor’s Note: This story was written by Maxava and submitted to IT Jungle less than two weeks after a magnitude 6.3 earthquake on February 22 caused extensive damage and killed at least 160 people in the city of Christchurch, New Zealand. Little did anyone know that northeast Japan would be hit by an even more devastating earthquake and tsunami on March 11. Our hearts go out to the survivors and emergency responders involved in both disasters.

When IT managers and executive management discuss the concept of risk management and disaster recovery, each side has a different opinion of what constitutes

  • Chinese Manufacturers Face IT Challenges

    March 15, 2011 Alex Woodie

China is often thought of as a powerhouse of manufacturing that is using its superior efficiency and innate competitiveness to win jobs from other countries and eventually dominate the global market. While some of that view may have truth, the reality is more complicated than that. According to a recent IDC report, Chinese manufacturers currently trail their American and Western European competitors in adoption of IT systems and business processes that will be critical to efficiently growing their operations.

For starters, let’s blow away the myth that China dominates the global manufacturing industry. The U.S. remains the biggest manufacturing country

  • DDS Conversion Tool Joins Profound’s Web Development Tools

    March 15, 2011 Dan Burger

Profound Logic Software has released an integral piece of its native graphical user interface platform built around IBM‘s Rational Open Access. The Profound DDS Conversion Module converts existing DDS source members to native IBM i objects that support a graphical user interface. It does this without relying on the green-screen protocol, a distinguishing factor compared to other application modernization methods. Profound is one of several IBM i ISVs making use of RPG Open Access.

The DDS Conversion Module is an important piece of the Dayton, Ohio, software company’s Profound UI suite of application development tools designed for Web formats.

  • LTO Group Confident in Tape’s Future

    March 15, 2011 Alex Woodie

People have been predicting the demise of tape for a long time–just about as long as they’ve been predicting the end of proprietary IBM midrange and mainframe servers. But today, tape remains a vital component of data center activities, just as companies continue to rely on the IBM i and z/OS platforms to run critical business applications. And if the folks behind the Linear Tape-Open (LTO) format have their way, tape will continue to stubbornly defend its niche for decades.

It’s been just over a year since the LTO Consortium unveiled the specifications for the fifth generation of the Linear
