  • Yet Another Tech Insider Trading Scandal in New York

November 9, 2009 Timothy Prickett Morgan

The lawyers at the Department of Justice and G-men at the FBI have sure been busy in the past three weeks. Last week, yet another insider trading scandal erupted in New York. This time another 14 people, including hedge fund managers, lawyers, and an analyst at Moody’s Investor Service have been charged with participating in an insider trading ring that has allowed yet another group of people to profit to the tune of $20 million.

The initial insider trading scam, which centered around the Galleon Group and New Castle Group hedge funds, came to light when six people were arrested

  • Enhancing CGIDEV2

    November 4, 2009 Paul Tuohy

Maybe “enhancing” is too strong a word, but “Add-Ons for CGIDEV2” doesn’t have the same ring to it. I have always been (and still am) a big fan of CGIDEV2. A tool, such as CGIDDEV2, must be flexible enough to cater for all tastes. But when you have nailed down your own standards and working methods it is sometimes easier to have add-on procedures to implement those standards and working methods.

With that in mind, I want to share a few of the subprocedures I have written that make CGIDEV2 a little easier to use in my development environment. All

  • A Quick-and-Easy Way to Convert Case in RPG Programs

    November 4, 2009 Ted Holt

Several good ways exist to convert letters from uppercase to lowercase and vice versa. Some take more effort than others. Here’s a very easy RPG method that you may not have seen.

Suppose a four-character program parameter is supposed to have one of three values: edit, post or both. Suppose further that you don’t want case to matter. The user can enter uppercase, lowercase, or mixed-case values. How do you go about testing the parameter in your program?

You could do it the hard way, that is, test for all possible combinations, like this:

     /free
        if inOption = 'edit' or

  • Admin Alert: Keeping i5/OS Ethernet Lines Connected

    November 4, 2009 Joe Hertvik

Many standard configuration i5/OS Ethernet lines have a common problem. If the line loses connectivity for any reason, the controllers and devices attached to that line will go into a recovery pending state (RCYPND), which requires manual intervention to restart communication. I ran into this problem a few weeks ago and found two solutions for resolving the issue and automatically recovering communications after an outage.

What Happened To My Communications Line?

I experienced this issue when my network services people took down our core network switch for maintenance one Sunday morning, killing Ethernet and TCP/IP connectivity for all network users.

  • Open Text to Support new Windows 7 Features in Host Emulators

    November 3, 2009 Alex Woodie

Organizations that use Open Text‘s host access software will be able to take advantage of some of the spiffy new features that Microsoft built into Windows 7, such as jump lists and multiple document preview. The company’s Connectivity Solutions Group (formerly Hummingbird) will offer support for these features in the upcoming release of HostExplorer version 14, due by the end of the month.

When Windows Vista launched three years ago, terminal emulator vendors struggled to support the new operating system. The companies rewrote chunks of code to handle the new Windows security paradigm and to ensure that established features,

  • Healy Launches iPDF Server to Ease Spool File Distribution

    November 3, 2009 Alex Woodie

IBM says it’s working on native PDF capabilities with next year’s release of i OS 6.2 (or whatever it will be called). Luckily for customers that cannot wait that long, there are PDF solutions from third-party developers. One of these is Healy Software, which recently launched a new product called iPDF Server that allows users to convert spool files to PDFs, index them in an archive on a PC or System i server, and then retrieve through a Web browser.

System i shops, like their cohorts running business applications on Windows or mainframes or Unix servers, are demanding solutions

  • Inovis Boosts Productivity for Green-Screen Customers

    November 3, 2009 Alex Woodie

In the world of AS/400 (Power Systems) computing, there is a constant battle between the 5250 diehards who love their green-screen interfaces, and the graphical types who feel that every computer should look and feel like Windows. EDI software developer Inovis recently proved that it’s not beholden to either camp, but answerable only to its customers, when it launched a new release of TrustedLink IBM i edition (TLi) that allows the green-screen types to avoid traversing at least one GUI to get where they’re going.

Like many ISVs, Inovis has been forced, either through feedback from its user base or
