  • New Address Correction Software from WorksRight is Suite

    February 10, 2009 Alex Woodie

You’ve probably seen it before: Somebody forgets to mark your company’s correct suite number on a letter or package, but it makes it to you anyway. Usually, this is the result of an astute postal carrier who knows his route like the back of his hand. But other pieces of mail may not be so lucky. Now, AS/400 shops can ensure their mail has the correct suite number by utilizing WorksRight Software‘s mailing software, which was recently enhanced with the U.S. Postal Service’s SuiteLink technology.

The USPS estimates that nearly 1.8 billion pieces of mail are annually sent to

  • System i: The New Choice of a Fashion-Conscious Generation

    February 10, 2009 Alex Woodie

The System i might not be widely regarded as fashionable. After all, other business computer platforms look a lot better in a tux than the old black box. But based on the experience of Elie Tahari, the System i is an excellent choice for fashion-conscious clothing designers–especially those that value good decision making and lean supply chains.

Elie Tahari is a designer of upscale clothing that can be found in Sak’s Fifth Avenue. It also operates its own chain of stores in some of the fashion world’s hottest locales, including New York, Miami, Las Vegas, and Milan.

  • SafeNet’s Crypto Appliance Plugs Into SOA

    February 10, 2009 Alex Woodie

Software developers who are wondering how they’re going to incorporate encryption into their service oriented architectures (SOAs) may want to check out SafeNet. Last week, the Baltimore, Maryland, company announced that its hardware-based cryptographic appliances can now integrate into their SOAs using a standard XML-based Web service interface.

SafeNet has been in the IT security business for the last 25 years and has sold more than 75,000 hardware security modules (HSMs), which it claims is more than any other vendor. These HSMs handle a variety of security tasks, including VPNs, encryption key managers, and disk and database encryption engines.

  • Hitachi Updates Identity Management Software

    February 10, 2009 Alex Woodie

Hitachi ID Systems, which used to be M-Tech Systems, last week unveiled Hitachi ID Management Suite 6.0, a new version of its cross-platform suite of identity management and password synchronization software.

Hitachi ID Management Suite is a collection of four components, including Identity Manager (ID-Synch), Group Manager (ID-Access), Access Certifier (ID-Certify) and Org Manager (ID-Org). The products address many aspects of identity management across major platforms such as Windows, Unix, mainframe, and System i, including user provisioning, managing groups of users, and password synchronization and single sign-on. The company also sells Privileged PW Manager (ID-Archive), but it’s not a

  • IBM Teams with Lawson for HR Management

    February 10, 2009 Alex Woodie

IBM and Lawson Software extended their partnership last week with the introduction of a new batch of software and services targeting the human resources departments of small and mid size companies (SMBs).

As part of the deal, IBM will market and sell components of Lawson’s Strategic Human Capital Management suite along with consulting from IBM Global Services. The software will target several HR processes, including payroll, benefits, recruiting, talent management, employee self-service, and succession planning, and it can be deployed in-house or hosted remotely.

The Strategic Human Capital Management is a relatively new offering from Lawson, and comprises the third

  • Payback Is Not Sweet for RFID, ABI Research Says

    February 10, 2009 Alex Woodie

Only 37 percent of organizations deploying radio frequency identification (RFID) expect to get a return on their investment within a year, according to a new report unveiled by ABI Research yesterday, giving more ammunition to critics who say RFID is not worth the investment.

ABI Research asked individuals from 185 organizations last summer about their RFID plans and expectations, and published the results in its Annual RFID End User Survey. The company, which makes money selling its research, provided a summary of its findings in a press release.

According to ABI, nearly 37 percent of the respondents said they did

  • Database Server/400, Anyone?

February 9, 2009 Timothy Prickett Morgan

The dividing line between a server and a disk array not only blurs from time to time. It also sometimes moves around. A system, of course, includes various servers as well as storage arrays, and the lines are less important. The AS/400 and its progeny have always been systems, even though these systems have been injected with lots of foreign technology–various file systems, runtime environments, emulation environments, and programming languages. Even databases.

The AS/400 was, first and foremost, a database engine, and one with an integrated set of tools for storing information in and extracting it from that nameless database

  • Who’s the Fool When it Comes to Training?

    February 9, 2009 Dan Burger

Is it true that the biggest hindrance to learning is fear of showing one’s self a fool? I asked Susan Gantner and Jon Paris what they thought. Their combination of experiences when presenting IBM System i and RPG programming topics at local user group meetings, for in-house training at businesses around the world, and on the speakers list at nearly all the major technical conferences tops just about everyone in this field. They also play a major role in the System i Developer team that organizes and presents the RPG and DB2 Summit.

Creating a learning environment, it seems to

  • Google’s Love Affair with IBM’s Offspring

    February 9, 2009 Hesh Wiener

Imagine what would happen if Google and IBM wanted to help you build your Web site. Now suppose the Googlers and IBMers created free site development tools that were aggressively open, capable of running on just about any platform, and able to build Webs that could be used by clients as small as a mobile phone or as large as an engineering workstation. Now imagine that all this has been around a few years and you’ve pretty much missed it, or at least not appreciated it. Maybe it’s time to say “Hello, World” to the Google Web Toolkit and Eclipse.

  • As I See It: If I Were Wise Enough, I Might Say. . .

    February 9, 2009 Victor Rozek

Watching the reawakening of the human spirit, manifesting in the guise of an inauguration, a National Public Radio commentator said it seemed that the new millennium had finally arrived. Truly, there was something Narnian about the event, as if we had parted the coats and walked through the back of the wardrobe emerging in a wholly different world.

Solemn and festive, the 1.8 million freezing celebrants enjoyed and endured a day of firsts. It was as if after eight years of walking down a long, dark, dirty alley, they suddenly turned the corner to find themselves on a brightly-lit, tree-lined
