  • Silvon Moves More of BI Tool Out Onto the Web

    October 1, 2013 Alex Woodie

Silvon Software is in the process of rolling out new Web and mobile interfaces for the planning and forecasting components of its Stratum business intelligence suite. The new Web interfaces were delivered earlier this year, and this week the company is expected to announce a new iPad interface.

Stratum is a BI tool used primarily by manufacturers and distributors that rely on the IBM i server. The software is based on a relational online analytical processing (ROLAP) database–deployed either on DB2/400 or SQL Server–that gives customers the capability to store and summarize a granular level of detail. On top of

  • inFORM Decisions Gives iDocs a Makeover

    October 1, 2013 Alex Woodie

inFORM Decisions recently updated its suite of IBM i-based document management software with the introduction of iDocs version 6.6. New capabilities in the release will be of particular interest to customers working in Asia, those who use lots of barcodes, and those who need to drive complex workflows based on variables in their spool files.

Support for double-byte character sets (DBCS) is arguably the most important new features in iDocs 6.6. DBCS-enablement is an involved process that allows a software product to support the character-based alphabets used in some Asian languages, including Chinese and Japanese.

    The capability to support double-byte

If you are, then a new utility unveiled by ProData Computer Services last month may be just what you need. Called SPLF2EML, the $195 piece of software allows a user at a 5250 screen to convert IBM i spool files into PDFs and then distribute them via email.

  • FormSprint Delivers Two IBM i-Connected iPad Apps

    October 1, 2013 Alex Woodie

Integrated Custom Software has introduced two new IBM i-connected iPad apps designed to help companies get jobs and tasks done more quickly and more efficiently. The new apps include FormsTrack iDelivery, which is designed for delivery truck drivers, and a Signature Manager, which allows businesses to capture signatures at the point of sale.

When the iPad was launched 35 months ago, it single handedly created a new market for tablet computers. And while Android has some 80 percent of the global market for smartphones, Apple’s sleek iOS devices have maintained market share on the tablet. This is especially true among

  • VAI Delivers One GUI for All Devices with S2K Smart Center

    October 1, 2013 Alex Woodie

VAI last week unveiled S2K Smart Center, a new HTML5 screen that’s designed to be the only interface users need to access all VAI applications. In addition to giving users a single, consistent way to get to their applications, S2K Smart Center also delivers social media capabilities, such as email, chat, and forums, by providing access to IBM’s Smart Cloud for Business.

There’s been a colossal amount of change to the enterprise IT landscape over the past few years. Not only are business users demanding the capability to access applications from mobile devices, but they’re becoming accustomed to communicating via

  • looksoftware Updates Server for Web and Mobile Interfaces

    October 1, 2013 Dan Burger

What do you want out of your Web and mobile applications? The answer to that is different for each company and each individual. Some want basic information all the time and anywhere they travel, and some want interactive capability on par with the best user experience technology can offer. All these things were on the mind of developers at looksoftware as they created lookserver 10, which becomes generally available October 10.

The delivery of lookserver 10 will be the final piece that aligns all the looksoftware products on the version 10 plateau. It serves Web and mobile applications to any

  • New Manta Training Combos Target New IBM i Hires

    September 30, 2013 Jenny Thomas

We here in the Jungle have been among the voices who cry out for more attention for the IBM i. We echo the sentiments of many of our readers, who would like to see Big Blue put more emphasis into promoting and growing this platform that we all believe in.

There are people out there who have never let the IBM i platform fall out of focus, who have in fact dedicated their careers to it. One such person is Bill Hansen, who has been an advocate of education since he started creating the first computer-based training courses for IBM

  • Proprietary Machines Show Some Growth In Q2, Says Gartner

September 30, 2013 Timothy Prickett Morgan

It is tough out there in ServerLand these days, and if you need to add capacity to your systems or get whole new systems, you can probably get some pretty eager salespeople to come and visit you. While the situation is not nearly as bad as during the Great Recession, the server market is itself in recession, as the latest numbers from Gartner show.

In the second quarter ended in June, the pattern is much as we have seen for the past several years. X86 systems squeak out some growth, the RISC/Itanium Unix market declines, and mainframes do their ups

  • Sundry Power Systems And PureSystems Announcements

September 30, 2013 Timothy Prickett Morgan

It is the fall, and in fact, this is the end of the third quarter, so if there is going to be some wheeling and dealing so IBM can turn in a good finish to 2013, I would expect that to start this week. That said, Big Blue tweaked a few things here and there that you should be aware of before the fourth quarter push gets underway.

First, in announcement letter 213-434, you will see that IBM has updated the PureApplication System W1500 machines, which are clusters based on Intel‘s Xeon processors, and the W1700 machines, which

  • IBM i Squeezes Into Arkansas Tech Curriculum

    September 30, 2013 Dan Burger

For many schools in the IBM Academic Initiative program the amount of IBM i-specific training is minimal. There are two-year technical colleges and four-year programs with multiple IBM i courses in programming, administration, and networking, but it’s not unusual to find a single course that introduces the IBM i platform along with other enterprise business computing systems.

“We have a lot of students who have gotten jobs because of this one course,” says Sarah Robison, an instructor at Arkansas Tech University. “It’s an advantage over other schools that don’t have anything like it. Businesses are having problems finding graduates
