  • It’s Time To Take The IBM i Marketplace Survey Again

October 22, 2018 Timothy Prickett Morgan

Another year has come and gone, and it is once again time to take the pulse of the IBM i community and see what is exciting and raising that pulse and what is not.

We truly are a community, and it helps to know what is going on. IBM doesn’t provide much insight into how the Power Systems business is doing, much less the IBM i platform within it, so we have learned to rely on surveys by user groups and by the major software vendors in the community to try to figure out what is going on out there …

  • Cost, Simplicity Driving Cloud HA Adoption

    October 9, 2017 Alex Woodie

In years past, the IBM i community has adopted high availability software at a slow but steady pace. But the cloud portion of this market is growing at a much faster rate, thanks to the lower costs and simpler setups that cloud-based high availability brings to customers.

Penetration of high availability software into the IBM i market is likely to hit 50 percent this year for the first time ever. That forecast can reasonably be made by looking at HelpSystems‘ 2017 IBM i Marketplace Survey, which showed a 2 percent jump in HA usage from 2015 to 2016, …

  • State Of IBM i Security: Seven Areas That Demand Attention

    April 24, 2017 Alex Woodie

The latest installment of the annual State of IBM i Security was released last week by HelpSystems, and the results were about what you would expect: most IBM i servers are basically wide open for abuse.

In a webinar last week, HelpSystems director of security technologies Robin Tatam discussed the findings of the report, which was based on security assessments conducted on 332 systems during 2016. He broke the findings down into seven core areas that should be addressed, including system security levels; administrative privileges; passwords and user profiles; data and program permissions; network access and exit programs; audit trails; …

    April 3, 2017 Hesh Wiener

IBM i shops seem to be pretty content with their systems. Profiles of the installed base, such as that recently published by HelpSystems, show a mix of old and new equipment with an impressive span of performance. For users, the stability of the base is sign that owners of the systems are satisfied. But for IBM, ISVs and other suppliers, an i that is not evolving is a dead duck. Suppliers to the IBM i market want the platform to become a phoenix, a fresh system rising from the ashes of aging predecessors.

In the past month, we …

  • The IBM i Base Not As Jumpy As It Has Been

March 22, 2017 Timothy Prickett Morgan

The backwards compatibility of RPG and COBOL applications on new hardware and new operating systems in the IBM midrange is unheralded in the IT sector, and perhaps is only rivalled by the longevity of applications running in Big Blue’s System z mainframes. Somewhere out there in the world are applications running on IBM i platforms that could be running code that stretches all the way back to 1969 with the System/3.

Change is measured in the IBM i base, and with good reason. Small and medium businesses are conservative by nature because they don’t want to run any unnecessary risks, …
