  • Tapping The Sky For Disaster Recovery

July 6, 2020 Timothy Prickett Morgan

The killer app for IBM i in the cloud, at least for the next several years, is very likely going to be disaster recovery and high availability. Not just because it is so much less expensive to provide these vital infrastructure services on the cloud than it is on premises, but because so many people still need DR and HA but cannot afford it.

The cloud is changing that, and a partnership between Skytap, the upstart provider of IBM i server instances in the cloud, and Maxava, the now established but once upstart provider of HA and DR software …

  • Abacus Cloud Customers Enjoy Wider Ecosystem

    June 22, 2020 Alex Woodie

For many years, Abacus Solutions ran its private IBM i cloud business out of a commercial datacenter close to its headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia. A few years back, Abacus decided to move its clients’ machines to a new datacenter, and in addition to getting better disaster preparedness, the move opened up a whole new ecosystem of services for its IBM i customers.

The move from Abacus’ old datacenters into new datacenters was completed in 2019, but only recently did Abacus Solutions announce it. To get the low down on the big move, IT Jungle recently caught up with Patrick Schutz, …

  • Industry Speaks: IBM i Predictions For 2020, Part 2

    January 22, 2020 Alex Woodie

What will happen in the IBM i community in 2020? It’s a question that’s worth some speculation, particularly from members of the IBM i community who have given it some thought. Here is our second (and final) batch of community predictions for 2020.

The IBM i platform has been chugging along for 32 years (or 40 if you count the S/38). Do you really think this will be the year that it goes kaput? Trevor Perry certainly doesn’t think so, and you probably shouldn’t, either.

“There will be continued predictions of the demise of IBM i throughout 2020,” the IBM …

  • The Cloud Breathes New Life Into Managed Service Providers

November 6, 2019 Timothy Prickett Morgan

There are a number of hotbeds of technology in the IBM midrange – Rochester, Toronto, Atlanta, and Austin are the biggies – and there is a very large number of business partners who have been helping customers try to figure out each step in the advancing progression of technologies that have come out of Big Blue and its partners for decades.

The business partners tend to cluster around the hotbeds, as you might imagine, and we are pleased that after all of these years, there are still a lot of IBM i partners out there who do everything from help …

  • Digging Into the Latest IBM i TRs

    October 23, 2019 Alex Woodie

The fall batch of Technology Refreshes (TRs) have been revealed, and as expected, there’s a bit of new functionality available for customers who use IBM i 7.3 and 7.4. In this story, we’ll tackle enhancements in open source, systems management and monitoring, and development, which means we’ll dive deeper into other areas, like database and HA/DR, in a future story.

Let’s start with the fun stuff: open source. With IBM i 7.3 TR7 and 7.4 TR1, IBM has brought support for two prominent open source projects, including ZeroMQ and Redis.

ZeroMQ is a universal messaging library that allows users to …

  • Staying On Top Of High Availability At HelpSystems

October 21, 2019 Timothy Prickett Morgan

HelpSystems got its start in systems management and automation software and has expanded its solution portfolio over the years to include cybersecurity, business intelligence, document management, robotic process automation, capacity management, and more. More recently, HelpSystems entered the IBM i high availability (HA) arena with their Bug Busters acquisition in 2016. I recently checked in with Tom Huntington, executive vice president of technical solutions at HelpSystems, and Tim Woodfield, director of development, to get an update on the company’s HA offering.

“HelpSystems does a good job of listening to the things our customers like and don’t like about their …

  • Shield Takes Another Stab At Multi Node In HA4i

    April 4, 2018 Alex Woodie

Shield Advanced Solutions is putting the finishing touches on a new version of its HA4i high availability software that can replicate data across multiple nodes. The product, which has the working name HA4i Multi-Node, will allow customers to adopt more complex data replication flows, such as one-to-many and many-to-one, which puts it on a more solid footing with other HA products.

IBM i shops have been steadily adopting high availability software over the past few years, studies such as HelpSystems‘ annual IBM i Marketplace Survey and Vision Solutions‘ State of Resilience show. We’re now at a point where …

  • Understanding IBM’s PowerHA For i

    June 12, 2017 Alex Woodie

When it comes to high availability on the IBM i platform, there are two main options: logical replication and PowerHA SystemMirror for i. While the architecture and benefits of logical replication solutions are well-established and well-known, PowerHA remains a bit of a mystery for many. We will try to shine some light on how PowerHA works, and whether it is the right choice for you.

There has been an increase in interest around HA so far in 2017, but many IBM i shops remain confused about the various options. In the first article in this HA series, we took …
