Support For Java 7 Ending WAS 8.5 On IBM i

IBM i shops that are running the traditional version of WebSphere Application Server 8.5 atop a Java 7 codebase will need to upgrade to Java 8 or risk running out of support from IBM.

At the end of July, IBM will cease to support WAS Traditional 8.5 running on JDK 7.0/7.1. Customers will need to upgrade their WAS 8.5 environments to JDK 8.0 to maintain support with IBM. A new Oracle JCE Code Signing CA was recently implemented in the IBM JDK to resolve APAR IJ26310. Specifically, this is related to IBM JDK 8.0 SR6 FP25, JDK 7.1 SR4 FP75, and JDK 7.0 SR10 FP75, whereby Java applications running on the IBM i operating system might encounter the error messages “JCE is not installed properly” or “JCE cannot authenticate the provider XX” or “xyz.jar is not signed by a trusted signer” after upgrading to the following IBM i Java Group PTF level or newer.

Java is alive and well on IBM i, but it’s in a state of change at the moment, thanks to changes Oracle made to how it licenses and develops the popular technology. Meanwhile, IBM is getting ready to exploit upcoming Power10 capabilities with its server runtime for Java.

HCL Certifies Domino 11 on IBM i/Power

Domino 11 officially shipped in late 2019 by HCL Technologies, the company selected by IBM to continue development of the Domino family of products in 2017. IBM Patches 28 More Security Vulns In JDK

IBM on Saturday released patches to fix 28 flaws in the Java Development Kit (JDK) that ships with the IBM i operating system. Almost all of the flaws originated in Oracle’s underlying Java Standard Edition (SE) kit, and many of them are considered very severe.

Twenty-seven of the 28 flaws impact the IBM SDK Java Technology Edition software in all releases of IBM i, from version 6.1 to version 7.3, according to the September 28 security bulletin.
