  • Why Big Blue Is Simplifying The IBM i LPP Stack

October 23, 2023 Timothy Prickett Morgan

If only the paranoid survive, as legendary Intel co-founder Andy Grove once quipped, then we all would pretty much have to be paranoid pretty much all the time. And this, obviously, would not be healthy. But as legendary founder of The Four Hundred, the irreplaceable and irascible Hesh Wiener, once quipped, sometimes they really are out to get you.

And so, we come to IBM’s recent “come to Bezos” moment starting late last year that it was going to be providing subscription pricing for hardware and systems software for the IBM i platform running on Power Systems. We fully …

  • ARCAD’s Deal with IBM for DevOps In Merlin Is Exclusive

    September 20, 2023 Alex Woodie

When IBM launched Merlin in 2022, it touted the browser-based environment as a new way to deliver functionality to the IBM i installed base and potentially to distribute third-party solutions. But right now, the only third-party vendor IBM is working with when it comes to Merlin is ARCAD Software, which has exclusive rights to supply the DevOps components within Merlin, according to executives with both companies.

IBM introduced Merlin with great fanfare in May 2022 as a potentially transformative technology. Not only was Merlin the first browser-based integrated development environment (IDE) from IBM, providing an alternative to the powerful but …

  • The Subscription Pricing For The IBM i Stack So Far

September 18, 2023 Timothy Prickett Morgan

We have been following the transformation of the pricing and packaging of the IBM i operating system, its integrated database, and the suite of Licensed Program Products, or LPPs, that are commonly installed alongside of the operating system to create a mostly complete system software suite. Last week, we talked about how the machines in the P05 and P10 software tiers would be moving to all-subscription pricing, and this week we are following up with the pricing information we have been able to gather to date as well as talking to Big Blue about the changes.

    IBM has been clear …

  • IBM i PTF Guide, Volume 25, Number 37

    September 18, 2023 Doug Bidwell

There are a few things you can count on in life. Death. Taxes. Coffee. Beer. The love of a good woman. And a seemingly endless barrage of security vulnerabilities for every computing platform on Earth. There are a bunch of the latter that are new to the IBM i platform this week.

First, we have Security Bulletin: OpenSSL and OpenSSH for IBM i are vulnerable to arbitrary code execution, denial of service, and security restrictions bypass due to multiple vulnerabilities, which you can find out more about at this link. The IBM i PTF number for 5733-SC1 contains the …

  • Merlin Subscriptions Picking Up, IBM and ARCAD Say

    September 13, 2023 Alex Woodie

Hundreds of IBM i shops have adopted Merlin since it was released last year, according to IBM and ARCAD, which jointly developed the development and code management tool. The addition of a subscription offering in early 2023 significantly bolstered sales activity, the companies say.

“In this last six months or so, we have really seen it tick up, which is exactly what we are expecting,” says IBM i Product Manager Alison Butterill, on the Merlin adoption curve.

Sales were a bit slow coming out of the gate for Merlin, the novel, browser-based environment for application development and change management on …

  • Low-End IBM i P05 And P10 Tiers Go Subscription-Only Pricing First

September 11, 2023 Timothy Prickett Morgan

We were away for our annual summer hiatus relating to the Labor Day holiday in America when Big Blue decided, as we anticipated in mid-August, that it would begin the shift to all-subscription pricing for the IBM i operating system, the integrated Db2 for i relational database, and the related IBM i Licensed Program Products (LPPs) that have been commonly used by Power Systems customers all through the OS/400, i5/OS, and IBM i generations.

Back in February, subscription pricing for the IBM i operating system and its integrated Db2 for i relational database was made available under subscription …

  • IBM i Fall 2023 Event Calendar Shaping Up

    September 11, 2023 Alex Woodie

The next variant of the coronavirus might try to stage a viral comeback, but that’s not stopping IBM i professionals from packing their bags and gearing up for a busy fall conference season, which starts this week with the IBM TechXchange in Vegas.

IBM TechXchange is a major conference that offers hundreds of sessions for developers, data scientists, IT architects, operations professionals, and infrastructure architects, among other personas. The event, which takes place September 11 -14 at the MGM Grand resort in Las Vegas, Nevada, is expected to draw more than 5,000 attendees for educational and training sessions on AI, …

  • Making Git Part of Your Modernization Strategy

    June 26, 2023 Daniel Magid

Maybe the most important part of your IBM i modernization strategy should be modernizing the tools you are using to develop and maintain your applications. Most of the application development world has moved to tools centered around using Git for version control. There is no reason IBM i developers cannot do the same thing. IBM is solidly behind this strategy with their new Merlin product and most of the change management vendors have some kind of Git integration.

By adopting Git for version control, IBM i applications can be managed with the same tools that are being used for development …

  • Big Blue Refreshes The Technology for IBM i 7.4 And 7.5

    April 12, 2023 Alex Woodie

As expected, IBM yesterday unveiled its Technology Refreshes (TRs) for IBM i, including version 7.5 TR2 and 7.4 TR8. These are relatively minor releases that bring incremental improvements to core areas of the platform, including IBM i Navigator, IWS, PowerHA, and RPG, among others. There’s nothing groundbreaking here, but the enhancements are undoubtedly just what many users need.

We’re going to dive into each of the enhancements and do full coverage of them in the coming weeks here at IT Jungle. For today, we’re going to provide a broad overview of the new stuff that IBM just announced this …

  • Wanted: Code For IBM i Contributors

    April 10, 2023 Alex Woodie

If you have a knack for IBM i development and a passion for open source, then Liam Allan, the creator of the Code for IBM i project, would like a word. That’s because Allan, faced with large demands from his day job at IBM, is seeking help from the IBM i community to develop and maintain the Code for IBM i project.

“Myself and the core team (three other people) are a little overwhelmed by our workload, balancing jobs and maintaining a large project is tough,” Allan wrote in a March 9 blog post on Ryver, the Web-based forum …
