Applied Logic Gives FEU New Printing and Zip Functions

Published: January 10, 2012

File Edit Utility (FEU), a popular database utility for the IBM i OS and its predecessors, has been updated by its developer, Applied Logic of Keizer, Oregon. Version 19 brings new printing and Zip functions that should make the utility even more useful.

FEU is a multi-purpose tool for accessing and manipulating physical and logical files in DB2/400, as well as accessing data areas, data queues, user spaces, spool files, and other areas of the IBM i architecture. The software, which was first released 28 years ago for the AS/400's predecessors, provides relatively quick and painless access to the system for a range of tasks, such as recovering deleted records, making mass changes to a database file, exporting and FTPing data, or converting data to other formats.

With version 19, Applied Logic has added a handful of new features, including the capability to format numeric fields when printing selected records. This will allow users to make printed output look a little prettier than it would otherwise.

FEU also gains a new Zip function that will enable users to Zip files that had previously been converted to CSV, XML, or text formats. This will provide users a degree of protection for their data, while also shrinking the size of files.

IBM i 7.1 has been out for a couple of years, and now FEU supports the new OS with version 19. This release also brings the capability to work with double byte character set (DBSC) spool files, which will enable the product to work with Asian language systems. The last new feature listed by the vendor is the capability to save a custom file view for full-screen or single-record display.

FEU version 19 is available now. Pricing starts at $995 for a traditional single-system license, or $1,895 for an LPAR license that supports multiple OS instances. For more information and fee trials, see the vendor's website at www.alcsoftware.com.
