Linoma Adds Secure Mail Module to MFT Tool

Published: February 28, 2012

by Alex Woodie

Linoma Software last week unveiled Secure Mail, a new component of its GoAnywhere Services managed file transfer (MFT) tool that allows users to send documents securely via email. The software, which Linoma is demonstrating at this week's RSA conference, will be particularly useful in unplanned, ad-hoc file transfer scenarios.

Secure Mail works similar to regular email, with one big exception. Like regular email, users can send multiple files to one or more recipients. However, instead of actually attaching the document to the email, Secure Mail replaces the attachments with a unique URL that the recipient can use to download the documents through an HTTPS connection.

This addition to the GoAnywhere family of products will be especially applicable in ad-hoc scenarios. In these situations, the senders and recipients may not transfer documents with enough frequency to warrant going through the hassle and expense of installing MFT or FTP software. The temptation is to use regular email, which is easy to use but has the side effect of comprising the document's security.

"Data security is so important and unfortunately, those daily ad-hoc transfers are one of the areas that are most vulnerable to data breach," states Linoma Software chief architect Bob Luebbe in a press release.

There are no document size restrictions with Secure Mail, and customers can further bolster security with passwords. Administrators have a full log of product activity to ensure regulatory compliance, and users can also set expiration dates and maximum download limits for the document sitting on the HTTPS server. Users can also get read notifications, like regular email, and use templates to customize their email with logos, colors, and fonts, Linoma says.

Secure Mail is a component of GoAnywhere Services, one of two primary versions of the GoAnywhere line. GoAnywhere Services was developed to give organizations an easy way to allow their trading partners to initiate file transfers on their own, through a simple Web browser interface.

The GoAnywhere products run natively on a number of platforms, including IBM i, z/OS, Unix, Windows, and Linux; distribute files using an array of protocols (FTP, FTPS, SFTP, HTTP, HTTPS, SMTP, POP3, and IMAP); support encryption capabilities; queues jobs for execution on servers; and keep an audit trail of all activities. GoAnywhere Director offers some additional capabilities not found in GoAnywhere Services, including support for PGP and AES encryption, file conversion capabilities, and the capability to do direct database connections.

Linoma added several other new features in GoAnywhere Services 2.60. The new self-registration feature will allow employees to register themselves in the product, and authenticate themselves against a database, Active Directory, LDAP, or IBM i user information.

Linoma has also added an auto-blacklist feature that lets administrators block out certain IP addresses, thereby protecting against denial of service attacks. Finally, the company has added a new password notification feature that alerts users via email when their passwords are about to expire.
