ExaGrid Adds Support for IBM TSM with D2D Appliance

Published: October 25, 2011

by Alex Woodie

ExaGrid Systems last week announced that its disk-to-disk (D2D) backup and data deduplication appliance now works in IBM Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) environments.

ExaGrid sells a line of Linux-based backup appliances that feature RAID-protected SATA drives connected to servers via NAS. The appliances feature byte-level data dedupe routines can shrink the size of daily backups by 20 to 50 times, according to the vendor. Customers can replicate data among multiple ExaGrid appliances connected through its "grid," providing disaster recovery capabilities.

When IT Jungle talked to ExaGrid just over a year ago to discuss its new support for backing up IBM i servers (which is accomplished using the Unix-like Qshell and TAR commands), the most popular backup products used by its 900 customers were Symantec BackupExec, CA ARCServe, and EMC Networker.

Now ExaGrid can add IBM's TSM to that list. According to the Massachusetts-based company, support for the IBM backup environment will help TSM realize benefits in several areas, including reduction in reliance on tape, and elimination of disk space previously used by TSM as an intermediate storage pool before data is written to tape. For the few IBM i shops using TSM, it also provides another mechanism to get data off the midrange server and onto the ExaGrid appliance besides Qshell and TAR.

In other news, the privately held company recently released some financial numbers for the third quarter. The company claims it set a record for the quarter, with 30 percent revenue growth compared to the same quarter last year (the actual numbers weren't provided). Today, the company says it has 1,100 customers using 3,500 systems around the world.
