RJS Overhauls Windows Version of WebDocs

RJS Software recently introduced a new release of the Windows-based version of WebDocs, a document management solution that can help to manage output from Windows as well as System i applications. Customers adopting the new version will see more powerful searches, easier integration with ERP systems, and a cleaner user interface, among other enhancements, RJS says.

RJS Software targets multiple platforms with many of its products, including document management, workflow, reporting, and forms tools. For some of these products, such as WebDocs, RJS maintains entirely separate code for the i OS and Windows versions. For other products, such as iForms, RJS develops in Java, enabling some platform neutrality.

The latest release of WebDocs for Windows features an entirely new ASP.NET 2.0 codebase that makes the product more powerful than any document management offering RJS has offered--for Windows, i OS, or any other operating system supported by the company, according to Richard Schoen, president and chief technology officer of RJS Software.

"Now that .NET has matured and become a widely accepted Web development technology, we decided it was time to upgrade WebDocs," Schoen says in a press release. "With many of our System i WebDocs customers adding Windows and Linux applications into their environments, we wanted to make sure they had the option of staying on i or running a more robust Windows version."

Users of the new version of WebDocs for Windows will find several new search enhancements, including a new "smart search," an advanced keyword search, as well as full-text search options. RJS also tweaked the user interface, streamlining navigation and re-designing the product's permissions systems. The software also brings better performance, easier installation, and better compatibility with Windows Server 2008 IIS 7, RJS says.

WebDocs functions as an "electronic filing cabinet," according to RJS, and is used to capture, store, manage, and route all kinds of electronic documents, including i OS spool files, invoices, work orders, faxes, reports, and even non-structured data like video and audio files. The software's Web-based interface allows users to print, e-mail, or fax documents in WebDocs, or just view them from its Web-based interface.
