  • Zend and IBM Sponsor Wiki for System i PHP Redbook Development

March 12, 2007 Timothy Prickett Morgan

In an effort to share the knowledge that is embodied in the software labs of Zend Technologies and IBM as it relates to PHP on the iSeries and System i5, and to help in the creation of a new Redbook for PHP on that platform, Zend and IBM have announced a collaborative Wiki for PHP on the iSeries.

The Wiki is being housed underneath its Redbook technical publications operation, and is therefore being called a RedWiki. You can read the short announcement about the RedWiki on Zend’s forums. Basically, it explains that the RedWiki will be used to solicit changes and additions to the Redbook that IBM put out earlier this year called PHP: Zend for i5/OS. Gary Mullen-Schultz, from IBM’s Rochester labs, is managing the PHP Wiki, and the way it works is that he will review who is making submissions to the Wiki and only approved remote residents will be able to post changes to the online document. The Wiki will be open from March 5 through June 29, and instead of trucking a small number people off to Rochester for a few weeks to create an updated Redbook on PHP for i5/OS, a larger number of contributors will collaborate through the Wiki software to create the next iteration of the Redbook. Typically, a Redbook has three to six people contributing, but using the Wiki software, the company is hoping to get as many as 20 people to contribute. If it were a real Wiki, it would be wide open to anyone, of course. It will be read-only for people how are not asked to contribute.
