  • Solimar Updates Output Management Software, Receives Xerox Award

    March 4, 2008 Alex Woodie

Solimar Systems announced new releases of three of its products last week at the On Demand Conference & Expo in Boston. In addition to new releases of its enterprise output management products, the company received an award from Xerox.

Solimar Print Director Enterprise, or SPDE, is a collection of Windows-based products aimed at centrally managing the production print environment, including enabling practically any printer to support practically any host, including proprietary environments like IBM mainframe and midrange servers that rely on the AFP and IPDS print architectures.

Improving the function of high-speed, full-color IPDS is one of the new features in SPDE version 6.1. “Many of our clients are migrating to full color printers so they can add variable targeted marketing messages to their critical transactional applications,” says Mary Ann Rowan, vice president of sales and marketing for San Diego, California-based Solimar. “Using SPDE, these clients can optimize their output and save valuable time and money by eliminating preprinted forms and static inserts and fully automate their digital workflows.”

Other new features added to SPDE 6.1 include: support for double byte character sets (DBCS); the capability to import or export targets and paths into other configurations; better security; support for TCP/IP printer failover; and licensing and user interface enhancements.

In other news from On-Demand, Solimar announced a new release of Rubika, its document re-engineering product, that supports the 2009 barcode requirement called the Intelligent Mail Barcode (IMB), also called OneCode or the 4-State Barcode. It also launched SOLfusion, a centralized workflow application that works with other Solimar products, including SPDE, Rubika, iConvert, SOLcript, and SOLsearcher Enterprise.

Lastly, the Left Coasters used the Xerox shindig in Bean Town to announce that it was named the Service/Support 2007 Business Partner of the Year by Xerox’s Production Systems Group.

“We are honored to win this prestigious award,” says Drew Sprague, president and CEO of Solimar. “The integration of Solimar software solutions and Xerox technologies bring together best-of-breed providers with complementary skills and technologies to improve production printing workflows of our joint clients.”

Your IBM Power Cloud Strategy Should Start With “Why?”

Moving IBM i to the cloud isn’t just an infrastructure decision.

A hardware refresh, data center exit, IBM i skills gap, disaster recovery requirement, or broader cloud initiative can each lead to a very different architecture.

At Lightedge, we start by understanding what you’re trying to accomplish. Then we look at the workload, application dependencies, resiliency requirements, operating model, and long-term strategy to determine where that workload belongs.

Managed IBM Power cloud? IBM Power Virtual Server? DR in the cloud? A hybrid architecture connecting IBM Power with AWS or Azure?

There isn’t one right answer for every IBM i environment.

Start with the business requirement. Understand the workload. Then decide where it belongs.

Explore IBM Power cloud, managed services, and hybrid solutions from Lightedge.
