  • SmarteSoft Extends Automated Testing Support to 5250 Apps

    September 22, 2009 Alex Woodie

System i and System z users were given another option for test automation this month when BlueZone Software inked a partnership deal with software testing specialist SmarteSoft to include its 5250 and 3270 emulators in SmarteSoft’s testing software.

As part of the deal, BlueZone, which is a subsidiary of Rocket Software, will allow its terminal emulators to be packaged and sold with SmarteScript and SmarteX, SmarteSoft’s collection of automated application testing. The integration means SmarteScript and SmarteX users will be able to test applications that run on i OS and z/OS, the vendors say.

Despite its name, SmarteScript does not use scripting to perform functional and quality assurance (QA) testing, according to SmarteSoft. Rather, the software works by “intuitively learning the windows and objects used in an application,” and thereby allowing the user to create “test skeletons” for each business process. SmarteX is similar to SmarteScript, “with the exception of script creation and maintenance,” the company says on its Web site.

The two vendors say they are happy with the deal. “This is a very important step for us,” says BlueZone senior VP of sales, Jeremy Sharp, “because it formally integrates two of the top products in their respective fields. We have actually been working with SmarteSoft for several years, but this release represents a new level of cooperation–and a better set of solutions for users in a range of industries.”
