  • CLI Unveils Ubuntu-Based Thin Clients

    February 8, 2011 Alex Woodie

Computer Lab International last week announced that it is now shipping the Ubuntu distribution of the Linux operating system with two thin client terminals. The goal in switching Linux operating systems was to maintain a high level of performance while providing greater flexibility and usability, the vendor says.

CLI is delivering Ubuntu Linux with two terminals the ST6800 and the MT2300. The ST6800 is a high-end terminal that’s powered by a 1.6 GHz VIA Eden C7 processor and can support dual video displays. The MT2300 is one of CLI’s value terminals, and is equipped with a 500 Mhz VIA Eden C7 processor.

In the past, CLI used the Mandrake Linux distribution (now called Mandrivia) with its thin clients. Now with Ubuntu, CLI has an operating system that it thinks will be easier on users.

“We believe our newest and most robust Linux offering will bridge the gap traditionally had with Linux by providing functionality more in line with full Windows, without compromising price point or features,” stated CLI technology director Jason Marshall in a press release.

Features of the new Ubuntu-based thin clients include the latest release of the Firefox Web browser, the Synaptic graphical package management program, printing support, and the capability to deploy the thin client as a kiosk computer. The devices support 5250, 3270, and VT connectivity to midrange, mainframe, and Unix hosts; support for RDP and ICA provide connections to Microsoft and Citrix environments.
