  • Top 10 Best and/or Worst Top 10 Lists

    The beginning of the year is a great time to reminisce on the past 12 months, think ahead to the next 12 months, make a resolution or two, and, of course, ponder the seeming endless top 10 lists generated at this time of year. We’ve saved you the effort of looking at the best and the worst top 10 lists of the New Year with our first top 10 list of the best and worst top 10 lists.

    We’ll start with the top five best Top 10 lists:

    Number One: “Top Ten Predictions for the Global ERP Industry in 2013,” by Panorama Consulting:

    1. Continued shakeup and consolidation of the top ERP vendors
    2. Best-of-breed solutions will continue to chip away at single-system ERP software
    3. Integration and solution architecture will become a hot commodity
    4. Continued adoption of mobile and business intelligence solutions
    5. SaaS and cloud hype will subside
    6. Uncertainty and risk aversion [will increase]
    7. There will be both winners and losers in ERP implementations
    8. Increase in ERP failures and lawsuits
    9. More organizations saying “no” to ERP
    10. More focus on competitive advantages and less focus on ERP “best practices”

    Number Two: The “Top 10 Highest Paying Jobs in Computers and IT” (by annual pay), brought to us by Bestcollegesonline.org:

    2. Computer and Information Scientists And Researchers — $77,000 to $125,000

    7. Systems Security Administrator — $52,000 to $ 84,100

    5. App Stores and Marketplaces
    6. Next-Generation Analytics
    7. Big Data
    8. In-Memory Computing
    9. Extreme Low-Energy Servers
    10. Cloud Computing

    Number Four: The top half of the “World’s Top 20 Software Companies,” from Silicon India:

    1. Microsoft — $54.3 billion
    2. IBM — $22.5 billion
    3. Oracle — $21.0 billion
    4. SAP — $12.6 billion
    5. Ericsson — $7.3 billion
    6. HP — $6.7 billion
    7. Symantec — $5.6 billion
    8. Nintendo — $5.5 billion
    9. Activision Blizzard — $4.4 billion
    10. EMC — $4.4 billion

    Number Five: “The top 10 Web fonts in use for 2012,” by the good folks at WebINK:

    1. Myriad Pro from Adobe
    2. Proxima Nova from Mark Simonson Studio
    3. Futura PT from Paratype
    4. Theinhardt from Optimo
    5. Effra from Dalton Maag

    Now we’ll wring out Best of the Worst, starting with….

    Number Six: “The Top 10 embarrassing tech flops of 2012,” by the LA Times:

    1. Apple Maps fiasco
    2. Path privacy breach
    3. Facebook IPO
    4. Nokia’s fake photos
    5. Instagram’s new terms of service
    6. Research In Motion (multiple)
    7. Oprah’s Surface tweet from an iPad
    8. The Facebook chair ad
    9. Homeless people as Wi-Fi hotspots
    10. Samsung’s killing puppies commercial

    Number Seven: “The Top 10 biggest drawbacks of Windows RT,” by CNET:

    1. Flash only works on approved sites
    2. Legacy Windows apps won’t run on Windows RT
    3. Apps can only be purchased through the Windows Store
    4. The apps that are available are pretty limited
    5. Even some traditional Microsoft programs won’t work with Windows RT
    6. You can only get Windows RT already bundled on a device
    7. Windows RT desktop mode is restricted to pre-installed, Microsoft-produced software
    8. For business users, Windows RT is less than ideal
    9. The number of Windows RT devices is pretty limited
    10. Overall, Windows RT vs. Windows 8 is pretty darn confusing

    Number Nine: The “Top 10 New Year’s Resolutions to Fail Immediately,” by the uplifting crew at top10buzz.com.

    1. Be happy
    2. Lose weight
    3. Embrace open mindedness and try new things
    4. Cut back on spending
    5. Give up an indulgence
    6. Mend ties with family or friends
    7. Join a gym
    8. Home improvements
    9. Work harder in current job
    10. Find a better job

    Number Ten: “Top 10 Reasons Humans Are Obsessed With the Apocalypse,” by listverse.com:

    1. You’re right
    2. It makes us understand ourselves better
    3. There are no consequences if there’s no tomorrow
    4. It’s common sense
    5. It’s predicted . . .
    6. We’re all bored
    7. It’s a collective death wish
    8. It’s about a basic human need: power
    9. It provides a sense of meaning
    10. An inflated sense of self-importance
