  • Joomla 3.1 Adds Dynamic Content Tagging

    May 14, 2013 Alex Woodie

A new release of the Joomla content management system (CMS) supports dynamic tagging out of the box, thereby enabling users to generate new content using pre-existing associations. Joomla 3.1, which runs on IBM i as a PHP application, also brings new mobile capabilities.

Tags are a form of metadata that allows a user to classify or otherwise note a particular piece of content. They’re often used in social networking websites, like Facebook, to help sort and identify unstructured content that would otherwise fly under the radar of search engines, such as pictures, sound and video files. However, tagging is also popular with highly searchable content, such as blog posts.

In Joomla 3.1, tagging will be used not only for articles, but also for contacts, feeds, and other types of content. The tags can be created dynamically from the content, requiring the user to categorize the tag with a selection from a drop down menu.

The new tagging feature will allow users to create lists, blogs, and other content from tagged items. For example, in a CMS dedicated to IBM i topics, a tag could be created for i5/OS V5R4, thereby allowing a user to quickly pull up all relevant content related to that topic.

Tagging was previously supported in Joomla from third-party providers. But the feature was important enough that the folks who help drive the open source software felt it needed to be properly baked into the product.

“Tags have previously been available through third-party extensions, but for 3.1 we are adding them to the core,” says Paul Orwig, president of Open Source Matters, a non-profit created to provide organization, legal and financial support to the Joomla project.

Making tags an integrated feature of Joomla will make it easier for third-party extensions to integrate with them, Orwig says. “Another underlying benefit is that the way the code has been written to support tags will lay the foundation for future enhancements for how Joomla content can be displayed with much more flexibility,” he adds.

Joomla 3.1.1 is a stable release that’s ready for download. The software will run on any server that has the necessary PHP runtime, including IBM i. For more information and free downloads, see www.joomla.org.
