  • Halcyon’s Extends SLA Tracking Tool to AIX and Linux

    November 5, 2013 Alex Woodie

Organizations that adopt the newest version of Halcyon Software‘s Advanced Reporting Suite can use the software to report on the performance of their AIX and Linux environments, not just IBM i and Windows, the company announced last month.

Advanced Performance Suite is a Windows- and SQL Server-based tool that Halcyon launched two years ago to generate performance reports for IBM i and Windows server environments.

The software collects and collates various systems management metrics of production server environments, such as percentage performance against SLAs, processor loading, CPU, memory and disk, SAN utilization, performance response times, and resource utilization. The software also tracks performance metrics that are unique to the IBM i server, such as auxiliary storage pool (ASP) and disk-arm utilization. The tool also stores metrics over long periods of time for the purpose of capacity planning, and also provides some analysis in this regard.

With the introduction of Advanced Reporting Suite version 9 last week, organizations that need to prove performance levels as part of service level agreement (SLA) requirements can now use the software across AIX and X86 Linux environments, as well as IBM i and Windows systems. Support for Linux running on IBM’s Power processors will be delivered in 2014, Halcyon says.

The new software is targeted at large organizations, managed service providers (MSPs), and computing bureaus that operate server environments on behalf of their customers. Halcyon has been targeting MSPs and data center operators for some time, and Advanced Performance Suite version 9 furthers this approach.

Here’s a sample of how an SLA report from Advanced Reporting Suite might look for an IBM i server.

As cloud computing continues to grow, MSPs will be challenged to keep up and prove compliance with the various SLA agreements they have in place with customers. A tool such as Advanced Reporting Suite–which enables users to compile reports with the push of a button from a Web-enabled interface–can help automate the process of proving performance guarantees, which would be quite difficult to do manually.

Advanced Reporting Suite gives users the choice of publishing performance reports in a Web portal, or output reports in major formats like PDF, HTML, XLS, and CSV. The software ships with several pre-defined reports, and allows users to customize the reports to fit their needs, including allowing users to add their own logos or their customers’ logos to the reports.

Halcyon is in the midst of a multi-year upgrade to all of its products, and this latest release is part of that. “Advanced Reporting Suite version 9 is a powerful tool that maps front-end service obligations through to back-end processing and has been updated to bring it into line with Halcyon’s new generation of Web-enabled products,” states Carole Chandler, sales and marketing director for the company, in a press statement.

Advanced Reporting Suite is available now. Subscriptions start at $600 per month. For more information, see www.halcyonsoftware.com.
