  • Remain Software Pursues 2E Users, Expands Asian Partnerships

    June 20, 2016 Dan Burger

Loyalty to IBM‘s midrange computer systems is a strong bond for many companies. Those with CA 2E application development environments are a great example. 2E, originally known as Synon, was one of the most successful fourth-generation language (4GL) development environments on the platform and that community continues to number in the thousands. Like other IBM midrange shops, they are concerned with application development, maintenance, and modernization.

Last week, Remain Software released a CA 2E interface for its IBM i Application Lifecycle Management tool, TD/OMS. The new release supports management of business applications built with the CA 2E case tool with an emphasis on increased insight, control and predictability of CA 2E software changes and their impacts on the entire application environment.

Remain Software introduced a similar interface for CA Plex users in February 2015.

The latest of Remain Software’s support for CA 2E development allows users to work in the CA workbench, while also having access to the application management functionality in TD/OMS. The benefit is managing 2E objects until they are ready for distribution to a remote machine or partition of an IBM i. The management features include the capability to work with the 2E definitions as if they are standard IBM i objects, copy objects from one repository to another, identify possible impacts of changes on other applications, and an overview of the entire application environment including multiple CA 2E models.

The CA 2E interface was created as a module of the TD/OMS Application Lifecycle Management suite, which incorporates IT business processes such as software change management, version management, release management, and software distribution and deployment. It integrates with the application analysis and documentation tool X-Analysis from Fresche, which brings automation to an otherwise labor intensive process during application modernization projects.

Remain Software also announced a distribution agreement with TroyTech, an IBM Premier Business Partner operating in the Asia/Pacific market. TroyTech will provide consultancy, services and support.

“Increasing our visibility in Japan, one of the greatest IBM i markets in the world, is a milestone in the Remain Software global expansion,” says Marco Kok, managing director at Remain Software. Nippon Express and Canon are existing customers in the Asian market. Remain also has a business partner relationship with Solutions Lab Yokohama, one of the biggest IBM i technology specialists in Japan.

“One of the challenges when entering the Japanese market is introducing the double-byte character set into software that already works excellent on single-byte character sets,” noted Wim Jongman, Remain Software CTO and managing director. Jongman said the extensive use of Eclipse technology in the company’s product development made the DBCS integration much easier. He added that collaboration with programmers from Solutions Lab Yokohama is leading to translating Remain’s software into Japanese.
