  • More Withdrawals For Vintage Power Gear

August 27, 2018 Timothy Prickett Morgan

In with the new and out with the old, as the adage goes. With the Power9 line of Power Systems machines all out and for the most part available – with the exception of the high end Power E980 that will be available in stages in September and November – it is time to start winding down more of the older stuff.

In announcement letter 918-097, IBM started to remove more things from the product catalog. The most important one in this round will happen on October 19, and that is when companies will no longer be able to buy new licenses of IBM i 7.1 on a wide variety machines, ranging from Power5 iron all the way up to Power7+ machinery. At the same time, some old some old 4 Gb/sec Fibre Channel adapters will also bite the bullet and so will some 400 GB, and 800 GB SAS drives and 1.6 TB flash drives for Linux partitions.

On September 30, the special Anniversary Edition of the Power9-based Power S914, which was announced back in May ahead of the AS/400’s 30th birthday, will be withdrawn. This was not a particularly generous deal, mind you, but it did have some goodies, such as free Software Maintenance for year for the PowerVM server virtualization hypervisor and an extended free period for IBM cloud storage for IBM i objects, and a bunch of educational services.

Effective August 7, IBM now requires that customers who buy a Power8-based Capacity Backup (CBU) system for high availability clustering have to attach it to a primary machine that has either a Power8 or Power9 processor. So all you folks with Power7 and Power7+ systems, you are out of luck on the CBU front.

It is hard to keep track of all of the stuff coming into and going out of the IBM i catalog, and we will keep track of it as best we can so you know what you need to do before you can’t do it anymore.
