Linoma Simplifies and Strengthens MFT Lineup
August 19, 2015 Alex Woodie
Linoma Software delivered a major overhaul of its flagship managed file transfer (MFT) solution last month with the release of GoAnywhere MFT 5.0. Workers will appreciate the shiny new HTML5 interface that lets them set up and execute file transfers with a few touches of the mouse, while behind the scenes, enhancements to GoAnywhere’s logging, security, and reporting functions will win points with regulation-wary administrators.
In launching GoAnywhere MFT, Linoma is making a big product positioning change for the GoAnywhere lineup. GoAnywhere MFT combines two of Linoma’s previous MFT products, GoAnywhere Services (GAS) and GoAnywhere Director (GAD).

SoftLanding Job Scheduler Goes with the Flow
August 19, 2015 Alex Woodie
When it comes to picking a job scheduler, IBM i shops shouldn’t feel as though they must buy software from incumbents, like IBM or others. In fact, you may be surprised at the number of job schedulers available from third-party suppliers. One of these, the AUTOMON for iSchedule job scheduler from SoftLanding Systems, recently received some notable improvements.
Job scheduling on the IBM i platform has largely been a green-screen affair. But as job scheduling gets more complex and job dependencies get more convoluted, prospective buyers are increasingly looking for job schedulers with graphical user interfaces (GUIs) to help

‘Workspace Aggregator’ Touts Mobile Access To IBM i Apps
August 19, 2015 Alex Woodie
A Belgian company named Awingu is touting its capability as a “workspace aggregator” to deliver cloud-based access to a variety of corporate applications and data from any browser-enabled device. Among the applications Awingu says it can tap into and securely deliver are those running on IBM i.
The explosion of smartphones and other mobile devices is having a huge impact, not only how we live and play, but how we work too. Thanks to the rise of liberal bring your own device (BYOD) policies and mobile-enabled software as a service (SaaS) applications like Salesforce.com, many companies are not only allowing

Staying Paperless On IBM i In A Post-It Note World
August 17, 2015 Alex Woodie
At some point during the move to the all-digital office, customers discovered they’re missing something that’s little, yellow, and slightly sticky. Since 3M launched the humble Post-it note 35 years ago, it has grown to become an irreplaceable component of the American corporate machine. In fact, it’s so ingrained in how we work that IntelliChief recently added Post-it note-like functionality to its workflow management software.
“What we found was it’s really a Post-it note world,” IntelliChief marketing manager Tim Nissen tells IT Jungle. “It’s amazing how everybody understands the value of the mighty Post-it note. We thought, hey, if

IBM Patches More OpenSSL Flaws In IBM i
August 10, 2015 Alex Woodie
IBM last month issued integrity PTFs for IBM i 6.1 through IBM i 7.2 to address eight recently discovered security vulnerabilities in OpenSSL. This includes the so-called Logjam Attack in TLS, which was disclosed by security researchers in May and could allow attackers to read encrypted traffic. The eight vulnerabilities also exist in i5/OS V5R3 and V5R4, but IBM will not fix them, it says.
IBM i shops are encouraged to apply the patches–including SI57527 for IBM i 6.1, SI57473 for IBM i 7.1, and SI57468 for IBM i 7.2–as soon as possible. For organizations running older versions of the

Keeping Up With Security Threats To IBM i
July 27, 2015 Alex Woodie
When it comes to security, the IBM i server is a different beast, as you well know. It’s not subject to the same sorts of malware attacks that afflict Windows, Linux, and Unix systems. But thanks to its unique architecture, it has its own peccadillos when it comes to security, and understanding those strengths and weaknesses is critical for keeping up with security on the platform. A new tool from Skyview Partners should ease the work.
In most organizations, the IBM i server runs the application of record, and as such stores the organization’s most vital data. This fact, in

Robot Job Scheduler Gets a Fresh New Look
July 15, 2015 Alex Woodie
In the world of Web design, a user interface built with a “responsive design” is equally at home on a smartphone as a Windows PC. HelpSystems took responsive design to heart with the latest update to Robot SCHEDULE, which now features a Web-based user interface that will give customers deeper insight into how jobs are running on the IBM i server.
With the new interface, Robot SCHEDULE users will be able to see IBM i jobs as they’re running, and interact with them through a mobile device. If a problem crops up with a job, the interface will notify them

Trial Date Set in Oracle vs. Rimini
July 15, 2015 Alex Woodie
Rimini Street and Oracle are prepping for a September trial that should help conclude the five-year legal battle over Rimini’s third-party ERP maintenance business. However, the clock is just starting on a fresh lawsuit Rimini filed against Oracle in which it hopes to clarify the legality of its new business model. Despite the legal murkiness, both Rimini and its top competitor, Spinnaker Support, report brisk sales.
The trial in Oracle vs. Rimini that’s slated to begin in about two months should decide whether Rimini stole Oracle’s copyrighted material relating to its JD Edwards and Siebel applications and, if so,

Infor Delivers IBM i-Based Cloud ERP for Automakers, M3 Update
July 15, 2015 Alex Woodie
In June Infor delivered two products that are relevant to its IBM i installed base, including the 13.3 release of its M3 ERP suite and a new IBM i-based offering called AutoRelease Cloud. The new cloud version of AutoRelease, which is based on an iSeries-based product once used by more than 100 companies in the automotive business, includes software from Infor’s business partner InterForm A/S.
Infor has been trying to get customers to upgrade from older versions of CRM AutoRelease for the better part of 10 years. Four years ago, the company had about 130 customers running the i5/OS-based
