  • Velocity Nabs Another JD Edwards MSP Firm

    June 18, 2013 Alex Woodie

Velocity Technology Solutions grew its managed service provider (MSP) hosting business for JD Edwards with its acquisition of iXtend this month. The deal broadens Velocity’s services for JD Edwards World and EnterpriseOne customers.

Founded in 2001, iXtend provides a range of technical services for both JD Edwards ERP systems, including hosting, extended support, integration, training, project management, and CNC administration, among others. The Greenwood Village, Colorado-based company also provides Red Stack hosting of EnterpriseOne on Oracle Sparc servers in its data center, where it also runs customers’ World and EnterpriseOne apps on the Blue Stack from IBM.

  • m-Power Can Now Extract Emails to Database

    June 18, 2013 Alex Woodie

Developers who use mrc‘s m-Power tool can now use email to pull data into applications, the company announced. This can provide advantages in certain types of applications, such as help desk apps, CRM systems, or any other application that depends on workflow.

Chicago, Illinois-based mrc laid the groundwork for email enablement with a recent update to m-Power that gives developers the capability to generate event-triggered messages from an m-Power app. This feature could be used to automatically send an email or a SMS message when a certain event occurs on the system, such as completion of a form on

  • Q Software Gets Oracle Validation for JDE Security and Compliance Suite

    June 18, 2013 Alex Woodie

JD Edwards EnterpriseOne shops that are looking to enforce segregation of duties (SOD) rules may be interested in the latest release of software from Q Software. The London company last week announced that the version 5 release of its flagship Q Software Suite offering has been validated by Oracle for JD Edwards EnterpriseOne version 9.1.

The QSoftware Suite helps reduce the uncertainty that exists around the people who manage and maintain JD Edwards systems, including World and EnterpriseOne. The software does this by providing a layer of security over the ERP system that enforces SOD and manages the multiple

  • StorageQuest Uses Flash Memory in VTL

    June 18, 2013 Alex Woodie

StorageQuest recently launched a storage appliance that uses Compact Flash memory cards instead of spinning disk to store data. Called the Flash Storage Appliance, the Windows-based device can communicate with any host over the iSCSI protocol–including, presumably, the IBM i server.

Flash memory has been used as a high-speed replacement for spinning disks for some time. In the IBM i space, solid state drives (SSDs) can be used in place of internal DASD, or loaded on IBM or EMC SANs to provide an I/O boost in external storage.

According to Canada-based StorageQuest, its new FSA appliance is the first storage

  • IBM Improves Private Cloud Control With SmartCloud 3.1

    June 17, 2013 Alex Woodie

IBM i shops and managed service providers that adopt the latest release of IBM‘s SmartCloud Entry for Power software will gain several new points of control over their private cloud environments, including the capability to start and stop workloads at any time, and the capability to deploy multiple copies of an image simultaneously. IBM also divulged pricing details with the SmartCloud Entry for Power version 3.1 announcements, and made a statement of direction regarding “adopting a common technology base” rooted in open standards for SmartCloud Entry.

SmartCloud Entry for Power is a lightweight (for IBM anyway), AIX-based software product

  • DB2 LUW To Get MongoDB Hooks–Will DB2/400 Be Next?

    June 10, 2013 Alex Woodie

IBM and 10gen, the company behind the open-source MongoDB NoSQL database, announced a partnership last week that will lead to closer integration between MongoDB and DB2 for Linux, Unix, and Windows (LUW), as well as WebSphere middleware. The work will allow developers to build compelling Web and mobile applications on DB2 that utilize NoSQL storage and query concepts. The question for IBM i shops is whether Big Blue sees fit to add the same capabilities to the DB2 for i database that is integrated with the operating system.

MongoDB is the most popular NoSQL database, which is gaining popularity

  • Esker Fax Cloud Boosts Service Levels for Distributor

    June 4, 2013 Alex Woodie

Fax may seem like an anachronism in today’s hyper-connected world, but it’s absolutely critical in some industrial pockets. For Edward Don & Company, the nation’s largest food service company, fax is used to send and receive hundreds of orders and invoices every day. But when Edward Don’s previous fax service provider couldn’t keep its fax machines on, the company looked to Esker and its Cloud Fax Service for SAP.

Edward Don & Company is the country’s largest food service company, with 1,200 employees and more than 70,000 customers. The Woodridge, Illinois-based company makes 12,000 products available to its customers

  • ASNA Refines Its Mobile Tooling with Sharper Icons

    June 4, 2013 Alex Woodie

Delivering a smooth user experience is critical when rolling out new mobile interfaces for applications that run on IBM i, or any other platform for that matter. But this can be a challenge for the typical IBM i shop accustomed to command line interfaces and keyboard-based navigation. ASNA hopes to make the user interface creation process easier with two new releases of its mobile application development tools, including Mobile RPG 6.1 and Wings 6.1.

That ASNA has two tools for creating interfaces and applications for mobile devices (smartphones and tablets) is an interesting story. The San Antonio, Texas, company initially

  • Bug Busters Strengthens Object Comparison in HA Software

    June 4, 2013 Alex Woodie

One of the bugaboos with high availability (HA) environments is keeping objects in sync. If objects on a backup machine aren’t kept up with those on the primary system, a failover may not go as planned, or the organization may just feel that it’s too risky to attempt. Bug Busters Software Engineering has addressed this concern with a new feature in RSF-HA version 9.2 that compares objects, libraries, and IFS directories on the primary and backup servers while the primary system is still online and in use.

Because data and object sync checks are so important, every HA software product

  • Inexika Reveals Prototype of Notes Mail App for iOS

    June 4, 2013 Alex Woodie

Inexika is working on a new mobile app that will allow users to access the IBM Notes-Domino database from an Android or iOS phone. The app, which has a working title iWorkplace, is in the prototype phase, and will deliver functionality that IBM provides with its Traveler software, but without Traveler’s limitations.

When it’s available, iWorkplace is expected to provide mobile access to several Notes modules, including Notes email, contacts, calendar, and tasks, as well as the discussion and team room collaborative functions.

You may notice that these are some of the same capabilities that IBM provides with Lotus Notes
