  • Shield Updates FTP Security Tool for IBM i

    May 14, 2013 Alex Woodie

Shield Advanced Solutions last week announced it’s now shipping an update to its FTP security tool for IBM i. FTP Guard4i version 7.1 features several upgrades over the product it replaces, FTP Manager 6.1, including better auditing of users’ FTP activities and a new Web interface designed to make it easier to use.

FTP is a critical communication tool, but it doesn’t come without risks, especially on the IBM i server. Without the appropriate system configurations or use of third-party tools, users are free to distribute IBM i data to their hearts’ delight. IBM provides exit points for FTP, as

  • Infor Lures PeopleSoft Customers with New Program

    May 14, 2013 Alex Woodie

Infor is targeting Oracle‘s PeopleSoft customer base with a promise to lower maintenance costs by 20 percent if they move to Infor’s products, most notably its Lawson S3 software.

Don’t be fooled by the name of Infor’s latest program, called “Save the People.” While Infor CEO Charles Phillips is to be applauded for his charitable work and his donations of time and money to good causes, “Save the People” isn’t about giving disenfranchised individuals a leg up in the world.

No, Save the People is all about building an ERP juggernaut … and sticking it to Phillips’ former bosses

  • Oracle Ships In-Memory Apps for EnterpriseOne

    May 14, 2013 Alex Woodie

Oracle last week announced that the two previously announced in-memory applications for JD Edwards EnterpriseOne, In-Memory Project Portfolio Management and In-Memory Sales Advisor, are now generally available. The applications, which are designed to run on Oracle’s “engineered systems” all-in-one mainframe appliances, not only run faster, but bring new functionality, Oracle says.

The new JD Edwards EnterpriseOne In-Memory Project Portfolio Management application is designed to help executives make more informed decisions about their portfolios and projects, and to do it faster than they can now with the applications running on traditional servers.

Oracle claims the new in-memory, job-costing software will work

  • Joomla 3.1 Adds Dynamic Content Tagging

    May 14, 2013 Alex Woodie

A new release of the Joomla content management system (CMS) supports dynamic tagging out of the box, thereby enabling users to generate new content using pre-existing associations. Joomla 3.1, which runs on IBM i as a PHP application, also brings new mobile capabilities.

Tags are a form of metadata that allows a user to classify or otherwise note a particular piece of content. They’re often used in social networking websites, like Facebook, to help sort and identify unstructured content that would otherwise fly under the radar of search engines, such as pictures, sound and video files. However, tagging is

  • Infor Adds NTT Data to Equipment Cloud

    May 14, 2013 Alex Woodie

Infor has a new partner working on its equipment cloud: NTT Data, a Japanese IT services firm with operations around the globe. The company recently signed on as the third managed service provider (MSP) to host the cloud version of the M3 application tailored specifically to companies in the heavy equipment business.

Infor launched its Equipment Cloud about six months ago to provide customers with another option for running the M3 application. IBM and Velocity Technology Solutions were the original MSPs selected to run the Equipment Cloud.

With the addition of NTT Data, customers have another option for running

  • That Old AS/400 Gets Some Love at Inforum 2013

    May 7, 2013 Alex Woodie

Infor is arguably the biggest provider of business applications for the IBM i server (formerly AS/400), so it was good to see the old black box getting some love and respect at Infor’s recent user conference, Inforum 2013, held in late April in Orlando, Florida–even if most of the love and respect was coming from customers, and not Infor.

It’s tough to tell exactly how many of Infor’s customers run their applications on the IBM i platform, in large part because Infor’s IBM i products are spread out across different divisions.

Robert Russell, the vice president in charge of development

  • Infor CEO Throws Down on ERP Competitors with New SoHo UI

    May 7, 2013 Alex Woodie

ERP software has never been “cool” or “fun” to use. But if Infor CEO Charles Phillips had his way, enterprise software would be as enjoyable to use as the latest social networking tools from Facebook and Twitter.

SoHo is the name of the new HTML5-based user interface that Infor is adopting across its various enterprise applications, including its premiere IBM i-based products. We gave you the lowdown SoHo, which was unveiled last month at Inforum 2013, in the story “Infor Exudes Total Confidence at Annual User Confab” in yesterday’s The Four Hundred.

What was clear from Phillips’ comments

  • BCD Refines Its Palette with Presto 4.7

    May 7, 2013 Alex Woodie

It’s true that beauty lies in the eye of the beholder. But it’s also true that ugly websites can be spotted a mile away. To that end, Business Computer Design Int’l. has updated its Presto Web enablement tool to make it easier for customers to generate good-looking Web interfaces for their IBM i applications. Version 4.7 also adds a new spool-file-to-PDF conversion feature.

Many of the Web-related enhancements BCD delivered with Presto 4.7 were made to the Palette component of the Visual Editor. The Palette, which debuted in March 5, makes it easier to design Web interfaces by allowing
